The employment contract is a mutual agreement under private law:
- the employee commits himself/herself to perform work under the leadership, and subject to instructions, of an employer,
- the employer undertakes to pay the agreed compensation.
The most significant characteristics distinguishing employment contracts from other kinds of contracts are as follows:
- personal dependence of employee from employer,
- performing work in an externally controlled organization.
The following criteria are irrelevant for this delimitation:
- Place of work (at home, traveler, changing place of work),
- degree of performance (handicapped persons),
- temporary interruption of work performance (military reserve duty training).

Il contratto di lavoro è un contratto bilaterale soggetto alla legislazione privatistica:
- il dipendente assume l’impegno di svolgere il lavoro sotto la direzione e nel rispetto delle istruzioni di un datore di lavoro,
- il datore di lavoro assume l’impegno di corrispondere la retribuzione concordata.
Le caratteristiche più significative che contraddistinguono i contratti di lavoro rispetto ad altri tipi di contratto sono:
- rapporto di dipendenza del dipendente nei confronti del datore di lavoro,
- lo svolgimento del lavoro presso un’organizzazione economica non appartenente al dipendente.
Ai fini di questa definizione sono irrilevanti i criteri seguenti:
- Luogo di lavoro (a domicilio, in trasferta, modifica del luogo di lavoro),
- Intensità della prestazione (persone disabili),
- Interruzione temporanea della prestazione lavorativa (per convocazione ad esercitazioni nelle forze armate).

Per il Gruppo, il principale strumento finanziario che comporta un rischio su crediti è rappresentato dai crediti esigibili, comprese le cambiali. Una quota significativa dei crediti esigibili del gruppo riguarda le società locali di distribuzione e le aziende settore energetico.
