More Less | Sample translations submitted: 1| English to German: Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp | Source text - English At a street market in Bruges in 1804 you might have admired a painting of a woman. Nothing special about it, except that it was a portrait of the great Jan van Eyck’s wife, painted by van Eyck himself. This was typical. Until the 19th century the public and the average art collector were not all that interested in the 14th and 15th century painting that we now think so highly of, so collectors who were ahead of their time made some remarkable finds. The museum owes much of its magnificent collection of early paintings to one of them. Florent van Ertborn, a knight and former mayor of Antwerp, came from a wealthy family of art connoisseurs and was a great collector. He built up his collection mostly from acquisitions and exchanges in Belgium and Germany. Van Ertborn really broke new ground in this country. Pioneers like him did not have any specialist literature to refer to and they had to rely on their own knowledge, intuition and taste. That makes their achievements as collectors all the more impressive.
When Van Ertborn died in 1840 he left the museum 115 works in his will, every single one a high quality 14th, 15th or early 16th century painting. Most of the works mentioned in this audioguide are from Ertborn’s bequest. Others were already owned by the museum or donated or acquired for the collection later. One example is Memling’s famous triptych of Christ and the angels singing and playing musical instruments. But it was mainly thanks to Van Ertborn that the museum acquired a new focal point to add to its already sizeable collection of paintings from the 16th century and Rubens’ 17th century.
