I am English and have been studying Portuguese since 1998. I have lived in Brazil for extended periods, having residency through marrying a Brazilian paediatrician in April 2001. I am fluent in Portuguese and speak on health and human rights at conferences and other events in Brazil.

I have broad experience in translating from Portuguese to English, with a portfolio of clients in the tourist, film and petrochemical industries, companies working in import and export and individuals working in the areas of research and journalism.

I sat the Institute of Linguists Diploma in Translation examinations (Portuguese -> English) in January 2011 as part of my process of continuing development and passed with the following results:

Unit 1 (General paper): Merit
Unit 2 (Business option): Distinction
Unit 3 (Science option): Merit

I was accepted as a Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (MCIL) in June 2011.

English is my mother tongue. I use Wordfast Pro translation software - note, I put TRADOS as an option as Wordfast Pro will work with TTX files and translation memories exported in TMX format.

My degrees (B.Sc., M.Eng.) are in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Bath. In more recent years I have been working in the area of health and human rights and am a published author in this field.

I have many repeat clients in Brazil and Portugal, including:

• an agency specialising in the translation of scientific papers (biology, engineering etc),
  
• an agency specialising in translating technical manuals, tender documents, contracts etc,
  
• a Brazilian documentary film production company (I sub-contracted Brazilian partners to produce transcripts of a documentary which I then translated),
  
• a service company to the petrochemical industry,
  
• a website design company (providing English translations of sites, such as for hotels),
  
• a publicity company specializing in the tourism industry (I have translated a guide book commissioned by the tourism authority for one of Brazil's states).
  
• a journalist writing for a major news monthly (I translate questions for English-speaking interviewees).
