Ο μύθος τού Οιδίποδα ταξιδεύει στον κόσμο μας αιώνες τώρα. Από τα σκοτεινά βάθη της ελληνικής προϊστορίας όπου πιθανότατα γεννήθηκε, ώς τις πάμφωτες σκηνές της εποχής μας όπου ερμηνεύονται τα θεατρικά αποκρυσταλλώματά του.
Ο μύθος του Οιδίποδα έχει μάλιστα εισχωρήσει και στο χώρο τής επιστήμης προσφέροντας αρχέτυπα και σύμβολα στους μελετητές τής ανθρώπινης συμπεριφοράς. Αυτή η ακατάλυτη διαχρονικότητά του οφείλεται ίσως στο γεγονός ότι πουθενά αλλού και ποτέ άλλοτε δεν αποτυπώθηκαν με τόσο σπαραχτική ενάργεια, ο ατελέσφορος αγώνας τού ανθρώπου να υπερβεί τον κλοιό τών ανερμήνευτων δυνάμεων που καταδυναστεύουν τη ζωή του, η ανυποχώρηση διερεύνηση τών ορίων της ελευθερίας του, η αυτοκαταστροφική αναζήτηση τής αλήθειας και της ταυτότητάς του.
Την πιο εύγλωττη μαρτυρία τής γοητείας που άσκησε ο μύθος τού Οιδίποδα, αποτελεί το ενδιαφέρον που έδειξαν οι τρεις έλληνες τραγικοί, αφού τον πραγματεύθηκε ο καθένας τους σε περισσότερα από ένα έργα, σωζόμενα ή χαμένα σήμερα.

Oedipus
The Oedipus’ legend has been travelling in our world for centuries; from the dark depths of the Greek prehistory where it was most probably created, up to the lightened stages of our epoch where its theatrical crystallisations are being interpreted.
The Oedipus’ legend has permeated even the field of science and it offers archetypes and symbols to researchers of human behaviour. Its indestructible time-enduring nature is perhaps due to the fact that nowhere else and on no other occasion have there been impressed with such heart-breaking vividness the fruitless struggle waged by human beings to supersede the encirclement by the inexplicable powers which domineer their lives; the tenacious probing into the limits of their freedom; and, the self-destructive search for truth and for their identity.
Regarding the enchantment which the Oedipus’ legend has exercised, the most eloquent evidence is the interest shown in it by the three Greek tragedians, since each one of them has written on it in more than one plays, now extant or lost.

I’m staggered by the ancient Greeks’ ability to accept and analyze contradiction and ambiguity. Ηistory is to do with finding simple answers and then dogmas and then going killing everybody else when they do not accept their dogma. The ancient Greek understanding of life is that anything that you actually discover is life to be contradicted, that if you worship any one god, you may offend another one and that only one god may be guiding and helping you, another god may be actually bent on destroying you. And that sense of contradiction and conflict, I think is extremely modern, and it extends through drama, through philosophy, through history, through architecture. Like the industrial revolution before it, this new technological revolution required new financial investments, new methods of financing.
It found them in the form of venture capital, as much a creation of changing times and circumstances as was instalment credit.
We may define venture capital as risk capital, that is capital which demands an exceptionally high rate of return to compensate for the increased risk involved in the investment, where the risk derives from the fact that what is being financed is new, untried, experimental.
The concept of risk, and of high rates of return associated with it, is of course hardly new. But venture capital, i.e. capital which seeks out new technology and promotes it, belongs specifically to this period, a period of great scientific and technological creativity.

Κεφάλαιο Επιχειρηματικών Συμμετοχών
Αυτή η νέα τεχνολογική επανάσταση, όπως και η βιομηχανική επανάσταση πριν από αυτήν, είχε ανάγκη από νέες χρηματοοικονομικές επενδύσεις, νέες μεθόδους χρηματοδότησης.
Τις βρήκε στη μορφή του κεφαλαίου επιχειρηματικών συμμετοχών, που ήταν δημιούργημα τόσο των μεταβαλλόμενων καιρών και περιστάσεων όσο και της πίστωσης που εξοφλείται σε τακτές δόσεις.
Ορίζουμε το κεφάλαιο επιχειρηματικών συμμετοχών ως κεφάλαιο υψηλού κινδύνου, δηλαδή ως κεφάλαιο, το οποίο απαιτεί ένα εξαιρετικά υψηλό ποσοστό απόδοσης, για να αντισταθμιστεί ο μεγάλος κίνδυνος που συνεπάγεται η επένδυση, και προέρχεται από το γεγονός ότι αυτό που χρηματοδοτείται είναι νέο, όχι δοκιμασμένο, πειραματικό.
Φυσικά, η έννοια του κινδύνου, και των υψηλών ποσοστών απόδοσης που συνδέονται με αυτόν, δεν είναι κάτι το καινούργιο. Αλλά το κεφάλαιο επιχειρηματικών συμμετοχών, δηλαδή το κεφάλαιο που αναζητεί και προωθεί τη νέα τεχνολογία, ανήκει ειδικά στην περίοδο αυτή, μια περίοδο μεγάλης επιστημονικής και τεχνολογικής δημιουργικότητας.
