KAPITEL 1
FREDAG 8 APRIL
DOKTOR ANDERS JONASSON väcktes av syster Hanna Nicander.
Klockan var strax före halv två på morgonen.
“Vad är det?” undrade han förvirrat.
”Helikopter på ingående. Två patienter. En äldre man och en ung kvinna. Hon är skottskadad.”
“Jaha, sa Anders Jonasson trött.
Han kände sig yrvaken trots att han bara hade slumrat i någon halvtimme. Han hade nattjouren på akuten på Sahlgrenska sjukhuset i Göteborg. Det hade varit en miserabelt slitsam afton. Sedan han hade gått på klockan 18.00 hade sjukhuset tagit emot fyra personer från en frontalkrock strax utanför Lindome. Av dessa var en kritiskt skadad och en hade dödsförklarats kort efter ankomsten. Han hade även behandlat en servitris som blivit skållad över benen vid en köksolycka på en restaurang på Avenyn, samt räddat livet på en fyraårig pojke som inkommit till sjukhuset med andningsstillestånd efter att ha svalt ett hjul till en leksaksbil. Han hade dessutom hunnit plåstra om en tonårig flicka som cyklat ned i en grop. Gatukontoret hade lämpligt valt att placera om gropen vid avfarten från en cykelbana och någon hade vräkt ned varningsbockarna i gropen. Hon hade sytts med fjorton stygn i ansiktet och skulle behöva nya framtänder. Jonasson hade också sytt fast en bit av en tumme som en entusiastisk hemmasnickare hade råkat hyvla loss.
Vid elvatiden hade antalet akuta patienter minskat. Han hade gått en rond och kontrollerat tillståndet för de patienter som inkommit och därefter dragit sig tillbaka till ett vilorum för att försöka koppla av en stund. Han hade jouren fram till klockan 06.00 och brukade sällan sova även om det inte kom in akutfall, men just denna natt hade han slumrat till nästan omedelbart.
Syster Hanna Nicander gav honom en temugg. Hon hade inte hunnit få några detaljer om de inkommande fallen.
Anders Jonasson sneglade ut genom fönstret och såg att det blixtrade kraftigt ut mot havet. Helikoptern var verkligen ute i sista minuten. Det började plötsligt regna kraftigt. Ovädret hade kommit in över Göteborg.
Medan han stod vid fönstret hörde han motorljudet och såg helikoptern vingla i stormbyar mot helikopterplattan. Han höll andan när helikopterföraren tycktes ha svårt att behålla kontrollen. Sedan försvann den ur hans synfält och han hörde hur motorn gick ned i lågvarv. Han tog en klunk och ställde ifrån sig temuggen.

Friday April 8
DOCTOR ANDERS JONASSON was woken by nurse Hanna Nicander.
It was just before one thirty in the morning.
“What is it?” he asked, confused.
“A helicopter is on the way. Two patients. An elderly man and a young woman. She has been shot.”
“Yeah”, said Anders Jonasson tiredly.
He felt drowsy even though he had only nodded off for about half an hour. He was working the night shift at The Sahlgrenska Hospital in Göteborg. It had been a terribly,strenuous evening. From the time that he had started, at 18.00, the hospital had received four people from a head-on-collision just outside of Lindome. One of them critically wounded, another pronounced dead shortly after arriving. He had also treated a waitress, who had burns on her legs from a kitchen accident at a restaurant on The Avenue, along with saving the life of a four year old boy who arrived at the hospital with apnea after swallowing the wheel of a toy truck. He also managed to bandage up a teenage girl who rode her bicycle into a hole in the ground. The local council had conveniently placed the hole at the end of a bicycle track and somebody had shoved the warning trestles into the hole. She needed fourteen stitches on her face, and a new set of front teeth. Jonasson also had to sew back a piece of the thumb that an enthusiastic at- home-carpenter happened to plane off.
The number of emergency patients declined around eleven. He had made his rounds and checked the state of all the newly admitted patients and then retired to a staffroom to try and relax for a while. He was on call until 06.00 and rarely slept even if there weren’t any emergency cases, but on this particular night he fell asleep almost immediately.
Nurse Anna Nicander handed him a mug of tea. She hadn’t been briefed on the admitted cases yet.
Anders Jonasson glanced through the window and saw heavy lightning out at sea. The helicopter was really running late. Suddenly it started to rain heavily. The storm had hit Göteborg.
While he was standing by the window he heard the sound of the engine and saw the helicopter struggling in the heavy squall over the heliport. He held his breath as the pilot seemed to be struggling to remain in control. It disappeared out of his view and he heard the engine slow down to a low speed. He took a sip of the tea and then put the mug down.
