What is meant by internal control:
A process designed to provide a reasonable assurance about the "reliability" of the financial statements and their preparation for external purposes, in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, including policies and procedures that:
- are related to the maintenance of the accounting records, that within reasonable detail, reflect transactions and the financial condition of company assets in a fair and accurate way.
- Provide "reasonable assurance" that transactions are recorded in such a way to permit financial statement preparation in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, and that income and expense transactions occur only with the authorization of company management and directors.
- Provide reasonable assurance of prevention and timely detection of unauthorized acquisitions, use, or disposition of assets, which may have a material effect on the financial statements.
