Hi!

I am working on Wordfast PRO 3.0 (on a MAC) and translating a table.

I have the following segments (the second column is the translation I'd like to enter):

ENGLISH (source translation) ITALIAN (Target)
Nominator's Manager
Manager del proponente

Nominator's Resp. Risorse Umane
HRM del proponente

I cannot extend the first segment because it belongs to a different paragraph.

If I try to force the translation by entering "Manager" and "Resp. Risorse Umane" as a translation for "Nominator's", the TM updates automatically and I end up with the same translation for both segments.

How can I solve the problem?

Yes, ATA also takes 16 weeks to deliver the results. This long time is needed because graders are also active, very experienced, accredited translators, and you certainly want your test to be graded by successful translators since that will also give a measure of your chances of success when you win the accreditation.

Yes, I understand your concerns. It was a shock for me not to pass the DipTrans in the first go and have to take one of the papers again after 15 years of successful translation and after passing the ATA certification in the first go. The best advice I can give you is to prepare the best you can for the exam and try again, even if you can only do it once per year. I promise it will be a good investment in the long run and that it will pay when interesting customers start to get in touch once you have the DipTrans.

Der Autor nimmt die Namen der Komponisten (Händel, Chopin, Liszt) und verbindet diese jeweils mit -bar, -fähig, -geeignet.
Somit bedeutet händelbar sowas wie verträglich mit Komponisten Händel oder seiner Musik.

FYI, it happened to my SDL Multiterm 2011 a while ago. I tried to locate the application and it did go to WebPrint (or the same applications). When facing the same problem (while you are using SDL Multiterm 2011), Lucia Moon's solution is worth trying. It works on my computer.

Not to get too off track here (assuming anyone is still following this thread) but I think it important to point out that persons such as the one that Charlie is alluding to here, even though they qualify in terms of their translation abilities as "professional," can be absolutely poisonous in any kind of online community, where narcissistic insistence on showing one's superiority to everyone else doesn't work so well.

Proz.com deserves credit for expelling this individual from the site back in 2005 (some members were up in arms over the decision). Whatever good she had to offer was, unfortunately, cancelled out by her personal nastiness. No online forum should serve as a venue for people to repeatedly act out their psychopathologies.

This highlights the need for some basic rules of decorum (which ought to still allow for "robust discussion"). The simple guidelines posted on the site Charlie left actually seem to be very reasonable in this regard.

The 30% are only tax withholdings, not the actual tax rate.
Filing form W8BEN will let the payer know that you are not subject to withholdings in the US. If you don't provide that form and taxes are withheld, you would need to file a US tax return to get a refund of any withholdings.

I have passed both the DipTrans and the ATA certification and, as a very quick summary, I would say that both are very alike. I would say that ATA's graders focus more on your specialisation and terminology in the specialised papers, while IOL's graders care more about your global linguistic and translation skills even in the specialised papers.

For both exams, you should prepare thoroughly. Unlike IOL, which allows the use of a computer if your examination centre provides them, ATA is still in its very early stages in this matter and does not allow to use a computer on a wide scale (as far as I know).

The problem I see with the San Diego University's translation program is that it is for bilingual people and the translation courses go in both directions Eng>Spa and Spa>Eng.

Would you be interested in that kind of approach?

If I took translation courses, it would be definitely only from my source language (English) into my mother language (Spanish), simply because Spanish is clearly my dominant language.

I have no idea how strong your English is, but unless it is nearly as good as your Spanish, it will be a waste of effort, effort that otherwise would be best used in just Eng>Spa studies.

The University of New York program goes in just one direction per curriculum (either Eng>Spa or Spa>Eng), i.e., if you want to go in the opposite direction, that is another set of courses leading to another certificate. Studies are more concentrated.

My humble opinion.

Un primer paso esencial es identificar plenamente al posible cliente, Se debe requerir toda la información de contacto necesaria y además verificarla. Pongan todo en Google, verifiquen el domicilio en Google map, busquen la página web si es una empresa, y verifiquen si la misma luce profesional o si parece una página cuya composición ha llevado un par de horas de trabajo. Busquen en la página web la dirección de mail y verifiquen que coincide con la que usan para escribirles. Busquen en la página web el teléfono de contacto y llamen para verificar que esa persona trabaja allí. Hagan todo lo necesario para estar seguros de que si hay que reclamar no encuentren del otro lado a un fantasma que se desvaneció en la nada.

El segundo punto es requerir una orden de compra con todos los detalles de la operación. Si el cliente está demasiado apurado para hacer una orden de compra entonces mi sugerencia es que dejen pasar la oportunidad.

Con respecto al pago anticipado, si les llega un cheque u orden de pago por un importe superior al acordado y les piden enviar el excedente de vuelta o a un tercero por medio de una transferencia entonces corten todo contacto en forma inmediata, que ese es el engaño más común de los que se usan contra traductores (eventualmente el pago excesivo de muestra ser falso y nos deja más pobres y con problemas legales.

Hola,

He tenido una experiencia un poco rara de una persona que me ha enviado un e-mail diciendo-me que quería una traducción muy larga para entregarla en 1 semana. Al final llegamos a un acuerdo de 2000 euros y me dice que pagará sólo cuando le entregaré el trabajo y lo revisará porque no confía en la calidad de la traducción; así que yo le envío la primera página traducida como prueba, dice que está bien pero sigue negando-se a pagar una primera mitad antes (cosa que yo le propuse entregando-le la primera mitad de la traducción). Luego, entonces, pienso en hacer un escrito como declaración de compromiso, a firmar. Se lo comunico y ya me dice que es demasiado tarde que ya encontró otra traductora.
Así que en toda esa historia querría saber ¿Cómo se suele hacer cuando nos contacta un particular para tener la garantía de que es algo serio (es decir para tener la seguridad de que nuestro trabajo será justamente retribuido) y no un fraude o una estafa? Yo, sobre esa persona, sabía sólo nombre y apellido (y además bastante raro) y me dijo sólo que me escribía de Perú. Sé que muchos traductores en esta ocasión hasta piden un adelanto (cosa que me parece muy lógica). Yo le dí a esa persona todas mis referencias y CV ect. para que viera que soy profesional, pero con todo eso insistía en pagar sólo al final. ¿Cómo lo veis vosotros? Me gustaría tener una vuestra opinión porque la verdad me he quedado con la duda de si era una broma o algo serio.

Gibt es nur diese beiden Buchumschläge?

Ich hätte ein drittes gewählt, eines, dass ohne Siegertreppchen daherkommt. Gerade dieser Grundgedanke vom schneller, weiter, billiger ist es ja, das gewisse Agenturen auf Gedanken bringt, mit dem Siegertreppchengefühl Übersetzerinnen zu allem zu bringen: zu 8k/Tag, zu 90% dicount auf fuzzy fuzzis, zu "reviews for free"...

ich hätte ein entspannteres genommen.

Actually, I use a PC with a 24 inch touch-sensitive display and Dragon NaturallySpeaking for translating and editing my translations. But I also use my keyboard and mouse quite a bit. I wouldn't dream of using a touchscreen for typing, but for controlling the computer, sometimes it's just easier to reach up and touch something or give a verbal command than it is to grab the mouse, move the cursor and click, or double-click, or triple-click. For example, I have shortcuts on my desktop to the folders I use most frequently. I find it quicker and easier to say "Open [shortcut name]" than to double-click on the shortcut — and its a whole lot easier than clicking down through several levels in Windows Explorer to get there.

The hardware and software aren't perfect, but they are big timesavers. I make a bunch more mistakes typing a translation than DNS does transcribing what I dictate. I think the technology will just keep getting better over the next few years.

Hi all, I have just completed a 21 minute long audio file transcription for what I though was USD 0.80 cents per audio minute, instead when reading the offer again it was actually USD 0.08 cents... That basically left me with $1.68 for the whole job!

Considering it took me quite a few hours as I care about my work, I feel as if I got ripped the f*** off! The lady who offered me this job was rude about the rates too saying that I had misread the email, and that was the rate that had been offered - there had been no mistake in the decimal point's position.

Well, if anyone has had this problem I'd like to find out if this person is taking advantage of other proz.com members and people actually trying to earn a living...

Hi Susanne,

I had to go through the quickstart to see what you meant, but I get it now. I am getting the same problem with any verification... in that the symbol does not display on the status column. The error is picked up, at least it is for me and I see it in the comments window, but it is not showing in the status column as it should.

I'm very surprised not to see this reported earlier... or maybe I just missed it. However, I have reported it this evening.

It's always possible I just couldn't find a setting somewhere so if I find it I'll let you know.

To answer your question, the New York University has an on-line Translation Certificate Program. I believe you would need 7 courses (at about US$695/course) to get your certificate.

I have read excellent comments regarding that program from former students. Looks like a very thorough program, with introduction to Eng>Spa translation, then specialized courses on legal, business, medical, technical Eng>Spa translation, etc., and they even offer internships.

And, for other people who may be interested, they offer the same courses for several other languages: Arabic, French, Portuguese and German.

Which of Hermann Hauser's waves do you think that will be? The 6th, 7th, or 20,000th?

When (if?) that happens the computers that will exist instead of humans won't need to make coffee (or keep it warm) and no translation will be needed because all computers will use the same language (if they communicate with each other).

However, my question was about what will happen before then, while human translators still exist.

I know the setting it not that great, and also the light could be better, but I did it alone, without any professional help..my next video I will surely improve this things.
Stanislaw, you are right, surely I could have done better from the communicative point of view, stating more the difference of my service and highlighting strong points.
I am not a born communicator! But I will surely think about your suggestion and try to improve on these points.
By the way, I have done this with Power director 9, which is a really user-friendly software. I do recommend it.
I have a proposal for the translator community..Why don't make a video-cv contest?
That would be something really interesting and funny..I mean, when we don't translate or have a pause from work, we could rate others' video-CV and relax!
I will propose this to the site staff..

Hi, Stanislaw.

Let me kindly disagree with these two aspects you would change:
- Blanc wall = no disturbance, cleaner image. And the "only" thing to pay attention to is... Bruno.
- Text "cutting hands": maybe the gesture of the hands is important, but I don't think it essential to show the hands 100% of the time.

First of all - very interesting idea, proably with huge potential.

A few things which I would change

Technical:
- blanc wall behind you does not lok very well -
- text at the bottom of the screen (and logos) cut your hands

Content
- I thik that it could be good to start with a few strong points - just to give viewer greater motivation to watch on and choose you
- I had a feeling (of course I may be wrong) that you concentrate too much on why it is important to have a good translation instead on why YOU will prvide a good translation.
- I am not sure if 3 min is not too long, I have a feeling that it would be better to squeeze everything in 2 min. tops.

Well - you asked for comments so here they are but in general I must say that it is a noce innovative idea and one which could bring you clients.

I think you should try distributing this among potential direct clients, say: medicine doctors, medical associations, hospitals, clinics, etc. Some of them will be interested in WHAT YOU HAVE TO OFFER.

Obviously, it is designed to beat everything that pretends to be CAT and Translation Management software. However, it glitches to often, slows down my machine and offers no tutorial nor clear Get Started instruction.

Therefore, I cannot recommend it right away, although it may turn to be worth being mentioned.
