I have put some general information on video translation - mostly for clients who need them translated, but don't know squat about the options - on my web site, [url removed] . There is some information for beginning translators too.

Look specifically under the "Articles" and "Video | Guide" sections, after having clicked on the "English" button on the left (unless you want to read them in BR Portuguese).

Dear Esther,

I find myself in the same situation as you, although in different language pairs. I did some subtitling for a company in 2006-2007 and never had the opportunity to work in subtitling again. The project ended and the company never contacted me for other projects. Them I had the opportunity to enter the world of literary translation and never again did subtitling. Now I would like to start subtitling again but I don't know how.

Well, maybe you should look for subtitling jobs here at Proz. I think it could be a good start. I've seen a couple of them, but unfortunately I can't apply for Brazilian Portuguese. :(

You could try Deluxe Digital Studios for the sake of experience. They seem always to be recruiting. I am doing freelance English>Swedish subtitling jobs for them. It's fun and varied but not particularly well paid.

I am trying to find French>Swedish subtitling opportunities, any tips?

Hi everyone,

I've been researching and reading up all information i can get the past 4 months basically about making it in english>english and english>swahili (my native language) subtitling .

I went to college for studies in the US for like 7 years but now am back home in Kenya. I've always dreamed about starting up a translation, captioning and subtitling company here because i think its a very lucrative industry and one that has very few players in our country.

I really need advice from the experts on some questions that made me feel like my efforts are all in vain, ideally because of comments that were made about the need to have a foreign language to translate to in order to become more competitive in the international market which i really want to break into. I never let negative comments put me down and am so sure i will eventually achieve my goals, somehow :) i always do.

Am positive someone knows the answers to some of my questions:

1) Is english>english subtitling/captioning an already native speaker dominated field that i cant break through and bag a few clients?
Like this month i decided to go all out and start looking for some work non-stop. i've tried sending resumes with sample work, came up with a couple of professional profiles and presentations to market my company/team, I've also offered to do 2 minute free trial work to prove my quality is top notch, but still no concrete response yet from the prospects.

2) Do you think am going about my dream the wrong way? which steps do i need to take to get freelance or full time work from prospective companies? How did you do it?

3) Do you have tips or possibly suggestions on which companies i could be targeting to increase my chances of getting positive responses?

4) Am about to finish my website as part of my branding strategy, will that help my efforts in marketing my team? Do you have any other marketing strategies that have worked for you?

5) Is my ambition to become successful in SDH and translation templates in English only too far fetched?

Hi Sarita,

The college I went to for my Master in Translation (Lessius Hogeschool in Antwerp) offers a post-graduate course in specialized translation of which audiovisual translation is one of the courses. I'm not completely sure you can enter with only a finished undergraduate programme, but you can always try ;-). I haven't followed the course myself, but attended one class for my Master's dissertation. There seemed to be a lot of Erasmus students following this course and as far as I know it's a good one. It also offers course in other subareas such as localization so you might be able to specialize in more than one subject.

That's where I did my MA. I learned a lot, but I have to say, the course was not very well organised. (My class was the very first to do this MA at City, so we were sort of their guinea pigs...) Having said that, they were very open to feedback and promised to improve the areas we suggested.

I am biased to talk about University of Surrey, as I am one of their subtitling tutors. But they were one of the first universities to offer this MA and many of the AVT scholars you are going to be reading have either taught or even studied there, so I definitely recommend it!

Hello,

I'm about to finish my undergraduate program in translation and (thinking about what to do afterwards) I find audiovisual translation pretty interesting. Therefore, I've been reading some posts about subtitling, dubbing, ... However, there's something I'm still not sure about. I believe it would be better to study abroad (so I can improve my English) but there are too many universities where you can do it.

Which are the best universities (in your opinion) that teach this program?

(I don't know if this issue has been discussed before, so please excuse me if that's the case)

If it's in the same language and subtitles must have the full audio content, plus any SFX (e.g. door slams, dog barks, etc.), either for the hearing impared or for exhibition in noisy environments (which make everybody hearing impaired), this is known as closed captioning. Though it may be done with subtitling, it's a different type of work, so maybe you should search about it as closed captioning.

Hello, and thanks for you reply.

First of all, the Subtitles are in the same language as the video, so they have to be the same and I also want them to be the same for education purposes.

Second of all Margarita Díaz, there is software that can do this, software such as WINCAP and TiGo (Tigo coming out at the end of the year). I am presently in the process of acquiring a demo. Be sure to keep you updated about this.

Google and YouTube's architect, which provides real-time caption and also script to video synchronisation. This has been around since 2008. Off-line systems are available. However, they are not easy to look up on the net as no clear definition regarding this kind of method it has been truly established yet, but it is also known as auto syncing.

Trying to use Aeguisub and SubtitleWorkshop, defeats the concept of any form of automation and does not make any workflow thinner. I have used Aeguisub and as an avid programmer myself and not versed in the art of speech analysis nor word identification analysis. However, as a free solution Aeguisub is a very good tool and I stand by it, however, it does not have the functionality which I require.

I do understand the concept of the subtitles must reflect the attitude of what is being said, as well as instigating word stress, tone, emotional stress, attitude etc. I am versed in third languages and now in the process of studying my fourth. Each language inherits its own peculiarities, and cultural colloquial essence. However, what I am doing, this is not necessary to interpret or if you we will use a different mindset. The translation is literally direct from the language of the speaker to the text that should be displayed. Everything must be captured. As before I stated that this is for educational purposes and direct one-to-one ratio translation is, nay a must to be achieved

If anyone is aware of any other software that I have not mentioned above, I would truly appreciate your support and help. I believe it is the responsibility of those who are gifted with experience and wisdom to nurture those who seek. If anyone has any questions about mainframes and artificial intelligence as well as automation. Please do not hesitate to contact me, although this might not be the right forum.

There is no automatic software that would do it. Have you try Aeguisub and SubtitleWorkshop? Both are free and I think both count words per row or, at least, per insert.

Apparently you need some course in subtitling, the technique in itself, and mostly the art to make subtitles in a way that a spectator not speaking the original language will enjoy watching.

You may find references, software, tutorials on the technical part of subtitling by searching on [url removed] .

While you may self-teach the art of it, it will take quite a while. I had some 17 years' experience in video translation for dubbing when I decided to learn the art of doing it for subtitling, so I focused on what would be the differences (a totally different mindset, while many of the tools are the same). The technical part may be learned in a short time from the tutorials available on VideoHelp. Yet mastery won't come overnight.

Hello all and thank you for having me here, great site.

I was wonder if you could please help me.

We have videos that we make between 2 - 10 minutes, 1 person speaking.

We have the script of what the person is saying.

At the moment we manually are making the subtitles using a piece of software, but it is done all manually. As we have the script it makes it a lot easier.

Is there any software that can count the number of words said and use the script text to make the subtitles, I know that this might not be 100% automated but there must be something that can assist.

We then export the subtitles as SRT files.

I think they do Dutch translations since they do lots of languages :)

I worked for Softitler some years ago and yes, their rates are low (23 cts per title at the time, I bet they've come down since) but they do provide good support, software, training and proofreading system. After a few months, you can start looking for other companies who pay better, but you know your job as a subtitle translator! Good for a beginner, I would say.

Hi there!

You would need an application / converter which can output the subtitles in XML for DCP format. It is totally different from FCP XML. I am afraid there's no other way to do it.

You can theoretically do it manually. But it's gonna take forever and even a slightest mistake would ruin the work.

Please send me an email if you need help / additional info.

Oh yes, I bet they still are. Last time I heard about them, they paid 0.20 USD per subtitle (i.e. 15 Euro cents). Plus their reputation is quite bad as far as quality is concerned. Just Google them, you'll find about that.

I live in São Paulo, Brazil. In 1969, Ford launched a car based on a Renault design that was the first modern front-wheel drive car made here. It soon became known for quickly wearing the front tires on the inside, leaving their treads new on the outside. There was a guy named Mario, who had a wheel alignment/suspension shop. Any such car that went through an alignment at his shop wore the front tires evenly afterwards. I won't get into technical details here, but the reason is pretty obvious to any layperson, when explained with gestures. Yet all the Ford engineers missed it, they were aligning these cars as if they had rear wheel drive, like all others at that time.

Now my point is that a genius as that Mario had a pretty shabby alignment equipment, though he kept it calibrated to the dot. When I questioned him about it, he explained: [i]"That machine just measures accurately all I need to know. [b]I[/b] am the one who must know if that is correct or not, and if it's not, [b]I[/b] am to decide what, where and how much has to be done about it.[/i]

Likewise, Subtitle Workshop just shows me the video and the time, gives me the chance to select when each subtitle should go on and off, and helps me create a text with parameters file that my subtitling software can use. I've been using Subtitle Workshop to do it since 2004, and haven't felt the need for anything better.

You may see some of the results at [url removed] . The first two video clips have been subtitled using SW for spotting; you have to click on the "theaters" to the right of each one to watch it. The next three are dubbed, and the two at the end, SW again, are directly from YouTube, where the end-client placed them. Please note that I have significantly downgraded the A/V quality to put them there to spare the server.

So, if you are unhappy with the spotting quality you get from Subtitle Workshop users, change the operator(s); most likely they won't perform any better with expensive software if they don't know how it should be done.

File compatibility is a completely different issue. If the end-client's equipment/software is not compatible with the files generated by ANY software, it will be useles.
