I tried to contact her today regarding a translation proofreading, and after my e-mails bounced back a couple of times I searched the internet and learnt the news.

I am very sad to lose such a trusted professional and a wonderful human being.

:(

(I had noticed before that date that Hans had suddenly dropped out of KudoZ.)

Thinking about it, it seems we only notice that a person was very dear to us after he/she is gone. Maybe, if that wasn't the case, we would treat each other much better...
Although I never met Hans in Person, he was ever-present at proz.com, where he sure set the highest professional standards. Looking at some of the recent questions on my return from holiday I had already been wondering about Hans. Where was he? Why didn't he answer this one or that one? His punch was missing. Sadly now I know why. You must have been a true fellow, dear Hans.

(K. Although I never met Hans in person, I found myself missing his presence here on ProZ.com of late. I am deeply saddened to know that we can no longer count on his lively participation. He will be remembered not only for the substance he brought to the discourse but also his personality. I know I am not alone in my admiration for Hans and would like to offer my condolences to his friends and family.

Inge

An "agree" from Jack pretty much settles the issue.

Thank you for making this 61-year-old feel like I've got some good years of translating left in me!

Jane

So I don't even know if this is the place where I can express my sincere thanks for your heart-warming best wishes on the occasion of my birthday. I hope this reaches you all so I can wish you decades of rewarding translating, an ever challenging and stimulating profession.
With heartfelt thanks to you all and especially Jack Doughty for initiating this chain of events,

Jack Slep

(Marathi never was good until computers could cope with the varying widths of the letters.) During power cuts he lit a candle and carried on, unless it was close to bedtime...

Not actively translating any more, but he still keeps up his ministry taking services at a nursing home and occasionally at church too. He goes out to see people face to face every day.
He has always been a mathematician, so he still keeps that up and the Times crossword!

Wishing you many happy active years at whatever you enjoy!

All the best
Christine
