File Format Preferences with MetaTexis

Forum: Metatexis support
Topic: File Format Preferences with MetaTexis
Poster: msgallo

Hi to everybody, and a happy New Year,

I hope you can help me with the following dilemma. I have been testing Wordfast Pro and MetaTexis, in order to see which of these tools better suits my needs as a freelance translator. I gained the insight that MetaTexis has difficulty translating diagrams, but seems to cope effortlessly with a lot of file types, breaking footnotes and comments into separate sections. I haven’t attempted some file types with this tool yet though, so reserving judgement.

I successfully translated Word documents with and without diagrams, footnotes etc, and I also managed to translate a PDF without any difficulty in Wordfast Pro. I’m confused, however, by how Wordfast Pro translates Excel spreadsheets, because my attempts did successfully add an Excel spreadsheet to Wordfast Pro, but it seemed to take every line as a new segment rather than seeing each text box as a whole. Therefore, text strings which belonged together for comprehension purposes were separated by other data, making the translation and comprehension of terms complicated or prone to error. This set of errors will be down to my inexperience with the tools, as I’m sure far more experienced users will know how to set up the preferences to cope with this. When you’re as computer-illiterate as I am, written instructions can easily be muddled, which is where I think most of my problems lie.

I’d like to ask which file formats are better supported by which of the two given CAT tools, and also ask your opinions as to which is better and why.

Thank you so much in advance for the slightest bit of information you can give me, I appreciate it very much.

Michaela Suzanna Gallo
Forum: Metatexis support
Topic: MetaTexis not recognising Diagram within Word document.
Poster: msgallo

Hi there,

I am trying to translate a Word document which contains a diagram within the body of the 'active document area'. Obviously MetaTexis deals with the diagram in a separate text area to the main text, as with footnotes etc, but every time the program asks me if I want to go to the next document area, and I click yes, it reverts every time back to the start of the 'active document area', effectively leaving the diagram untranslated.

I have been trying this several times in a row, and still no success. Can anyone help me with it?

Thanks in advance

You need to install the 32-bit edition of Word 2010, if you intend to run add-ins, for, almost all Word add-ins were developed in 32-bit mode.

Best regards
Hermann
I don't know what those extensions are, but I assume they are all Trados related somehow. I'm following the video tutorial on metatexis.com, but the problem is that Metatexis doesn't recognize any of these extensions, and I can't seem to find a way to attach the client's TM.

I would really appreciate a step-by-step instruction how to take those 5 files and turn them into a Metatexis TM. TIA.

[Edited at 2011-10-27 18:38 GMT]

Forum: Metatexis support
Topic: [SOLVED] Machine translation problem
Poster: xxxfilippaluba

I have a problem considering machine translation via Google. Metatexis connects to the server and downloads a file named "[t]". A pop-up appears asking for chosing a program to open this file. I opened it in notepad and it does contain the translation (among others) but it should be automatically inserted into the segment. How to fix this problem?

This is what the [t] file contains:
[[["Trying MetaTexis and Google Translator .","Próba Metatexis i Google Translatora.","",""]],,"pl",,[["Trying",[5],1,0,529,0,1,0],["MetaTexis",[6],1,0,449,1,2,0],["and Google",[7],1,0,366,2,4,0],["Translator",[8],1,0,529,4,5,0],[".",[9],0,0,529,5,6,0]],[["Próba",5,[["Trying",529,1,0],["Attempting",340,1,0],["Attempt",130,1,0],["Attempt to",0,1,0],["An attempt",0,1,0]],[[0,5]],"Próba Metatexis i Google Translatora."],["Metatexis",6,[["MetaTexis",449,1,0],["the MetaTexis",0,1,0],["of MetaTexis",0,1,0],["a MetaTexis",0,1,0]],[[6,15]],""],["i Google",7,[["and Google",366,1,0],["or Google",0,1,0],["and the Google",0,1,0]],[[16,24]],""],["Translatora",8,[["Translator",529,1,0]],[[25,36]],""],[".",9,[[".",529,0,0]],[[36,37]],""]],,,[["en","fr","sv","ro","pl"]],60]
SOLUTION:
I sent a message to Metatexis support and received a solution almost immediately. I would like to install Office 2010, but am afraid that it might mess things up for me and cause problems in the use of Metatexis.

If that is the case, or in doubt, I will have to wait...

Thanks for any input you might have!

CC
According to my experience there are no issues with the 3.... version of MetaTexis and Office 2010, they work just fine.

There might be an issue if you use W7-64bit and or use the SQLite database format there might be a hickup. You might have to use the Access formant again for your TM

So, for safety's sake export all your TMs into tmx so that in case they do not work you can set up a new one and then import the tmx.

Otherwise everything is just fine as usual
kind regards
wdk

First column has the source language words (single words and short sentences) and the second column has the target language, everything is filled in.

Now I need to translate a different document where many, if not most or all of the words are the same as in the original document, but only the column with the source lange is filled in and the second column needs filling in. The words will not be in the same order and some words/phrases might differ from the original document.

Is there any way that I can easily add the combinations from the original document to my TM (I am using MetaTexis NET/Office)?
Forum: Metatexis support
Topic: using string as segmentation marker
Poster: scribext

Hi all,

is there any way to have MT automatically split a paragraph into two segments when it finds a specific string?

Example: given a paragraph "aaaaaaa bbbbbbb cccc dddd ffffff" I need it to split it into "aaaaaaa bbbbbbb cccc" and "dddd ffffff" whenever the string " cccc" is found in the source text.

I know you can have MT automatically split after e.g. "; " or ". " etc. and that you can define a sequence after which a split is done, but I need to do the same using a string that contains more than two characters...

thanks

stef

Then you can check and test if MetaTexis can do this. MetaTexis can do a lot, but, MetaTexis is not a TRADOS clone.

Best regards
Hermann

It's quite simple to switch to another database type under Meta Texis (check the user guide or google or Proz.com forums)

Maybe that's the cause of the crashes?

Good day

Forum: Metatexis support
Topic: Problems with Metatexis for Word (version 3.0)
Poster: dochartach

I'm fairly new to translation software. I had been using a free version of Metatexis lite for around 6 months. I liked the layout and the fact that that source segments could be viewed alongside translated segments. I didn't really utilise many features of the translation software. I decided to trial the newest version and to try to utilise the package more fully. I had a termbase I wanted to use and I wanted to try out the alignment tools.
Version 3.0 seems less stable than the lite version I'm used to.

I went through the usual steps in preparing my document for translation however, I specified the folder where metatexis was to create the separate metatexis version of my word file, however, on finishing work for the day Metatexis did not create a separate file but merely saved the file under it's own name with the changes implemented. I did not worry as I had a backup.
I picked up where I left off the second day and things seemed to be working well - it's a bit slow but I put that down to the size of my term base c. 190,000 entries??.
My computer froze half way during the day - I can't say for certain if this was anything to do with metatexis or not, but when I rebooted I was able to recover most of what I had translated, but the document was a normal word document. The Metatexis toolbar is now nowhere to be seen. I've tried everything but can't access any of the metatexis features or tools? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Forum: Metatexis support
Topic: Exporting Metatexis TM (.mxa) to Trados (.tmx?)
Poster: Krystian Aparta

I have finally decided to switch to Trados after happily using Metatexis for over 2 years, because so many people requested Trados. I've purchased the SDL Trados Studio 2009, and I don't yet know a thing about it, but I would like to export my Metatexis translation database as something that can be imported into Trados. I've got two questions - can this be done, and can this be done in Metatexis Lite, because that's the version that I have been using.
If there is no way to do this in Metatexis Lite, can somebody think of a workaround? I wouldn't like to have to pay for Metatexis Pro just to be able to export a file and then never use the program again.
