The question of whether translators should stick to the source text or to the template is a continual source of debate. A (somewhat simpler) problem that new translators have is where to find the template and what to do with it when they find it.

Last week an agency asked me to write some basic instructions for its medical translators about how to use the EMA templates. They said I could publish the mini guide in my new blog, "Signs & Symptoms of Translation", so I thought I would leave a link here for anyone who stumbles across this post in the future:

Hi,

I found an article in English (I'm happy, don't need to write it myself :-) ), which confirms what I announced on last December 21st :
AFSSAPS (Agence Française de Sécurité SAnitaire des Produits de Santé)
French medicine agency) will officially become before August 1st, at the
latest :

ANSM = Agence Nationale de Sécurité des Médicaments et des produits de
santé.
(the official abbreviation being shorter than what the full name would produce)

The article says that an official decree is pending,

Hi,

One colleague shared an article on the "Medical_Translation" list, which announces that a major pharma manufacturer has decided to provide public access to a big healthcare data dictionary, called "HDD Access".

I have visited the HDD Access, and I must say that, even in the present state, i.e. web-based only, it is a great promising tool.

It is primarily useful to find all existing (English) synonyms for conditions, syndromes, signs and symptoms, etc, and developments of abbreviations. It will be of a great help to us, given the authors creativity in this aspect :-)

I have occasionally felt pangs of conscience about not subscribing to some of the journals I 'ought ' to, and then again - I translate to make a living! I simply do not earn enough to subscribe to them all.

If the knowledge in English is expensive, then it is really prohibtively expensive, read inaccessible, to many of the world's poorer students and nations.

Their contributions to research are potentially just as great, so they derserve their share of the benefits too.

Hi,

This morning, I discovered the petition called "The Cost of Knowledge",
signed by scientists around the world who challenge the exorbitant cost
of access to scientific literature and research data, mainly imposed by
3 publishers.

I signed this petition and, as they offer a space for comments, here is
mine :

"As medical translators are the crucial link between researchers and
physicians around the world, while they are mostly free-lancing, they
must access the newest scientific information and research data but they
are hampered too often by the exorbitant and unjustified cost of such an
access."

Hi Anna and Emma,

I agree with both of you for the uppercases. I think they are only used for coding purposes, not to be used in SPCs, I suppose.

@Emma : Funny, I have the same folder, too :-)

@Anna : Those vocabulary lists are to be used mainly for the marketing authorization application submissions. It's why they are in English only.

From the translator's point of view, they are useful for those of us who translate parts of the MAA dossier into EN. They can also be used as reference material, useful when some of our clients - whatever the language - become too "creative" as far as the pharmaceutical form designations are concerned, for instance :-)

I agree that it is of no use to re-invent the wheel, so existing terminology and phrases should be used. But...the problem is that a lot of standards and norms are NOT free and are sometimes even pretty expensive. If the company for whom I am translating (or the agency as an intermediary, for that matter) is unwilling or cannot be bothered to provide me with the material of which I simply know that it exists (which has happened to me!), then I don't think that it is part of my job to spend substantial amounts of money on this.

Companies an/or agencies sometimes (I admit that this is rare, but it does happen) cannot even be bothered to clarify dodgy sentences or paragraphs in the original. It is usually "up to the translator" to come up with a plausible explanation. Sorry, that is not how things work!

That said, these little exercises like the one this thread is about, could be beneficial to anybody who actually cares about delivering quality work. Testing oneself is always a good thing to do! Nobody is infallible.
