About me

My father was French Canadian, so spoke to me in French from the time I was born, but stopped when I was four because he decided he wanted me to have a Parisian accent. I began studying French formally at age 11.
I have an A.B. from Hunter College of the City of New York in French and Spanish (1963), language and literature.
I worked for the U.N., Information and Reception Unit from 1963-64.
I have my masters in French language and Medieval Literature from Stanford University (I had a teaching Assistantship from 1964-66), 1966, and another Masters in Spanish from Stanford, 1968. My dissertation was on the Entremeses of Cervantes.
I have a third masters and Ph.D. from Princeton University in French Medieval Literature.
I began translating from French when I was in College, around 1960. I have also done translations from English in to French. It is fast and easy for me to translate from French or Spanish into English. It is a little slower from English to French. I recently translated a 100-page workers' manual for Bordine Nursery into Spanish. That was much harder than anything I've ever done, but I'm told I did a good job. What I love to do is popular articles or fiction from French or Spanish into English, or from English into French.
I attended the Universities of Geneva, Lausanne, and Boulogne-sur-mer during the summers between 1961 and 1963. I lived on the Riviera during the summer of 1972 (May to August).
I have taught French all of my life, at the Universities of Stanford, Princeton, Oakland (in Rochester, Michigan). I teach classes at home every night of the week, and have had some of the same students for ten years.
