It's a strange, heady painting. She looks drugged, ecstatic, disengaged from the real, transported into a realm of fantasy. You have to look for only a few seconds to realise that this is not a realistic painting of a woman in a landscape; the trees and grass do not even attempt to imitate appearances. They are dream images - the trees have a deliciously light blue, sketchy quality, as if painted on silk, and the canopy of foliage around Perdita forms itself, as if by magic, into a natural enclosure. Nature has moulded itself to the shape of her feeling. It enfolds and decorates her, amplifies her thoughts. This is a modern painting, if the definition of modern art is that it acknowledges the subjective emotions of the artist rather than claiming to present eternal facts. Gainsborough's rival, Sir Joshua Reynolds, was a champion of permanent, classical values. Gainsborough was the opposite. He painted contingent, ephemeral pleasures - the shimmering stuff of Perdita's skirts, the blue ribbon over her creamy chest. | Translation - French Les dessous de l'histoire
C’est une peinture étrange et enivrante. Le personnage semble flotter dans un brouillard vaporeux, en extase, déconnecté de la réalité, transporté au royaume de l’imaginaire. Quelques secondes suffisent pour se rendre compte qu’il ne s’agit pas d’une peinture réaliste représentant une femme sur fond de paysage ; les arbres et l’herbe ne visent pas à imiter les apparences. Ce sont plutôt des images de rêve ; les arbres ont une qualité d’esquisse d’un bleu clair exquis, comme s’ils avaient été peints sur soie, et la couverture de feuillage entourant Perdita prend comme par magie la forme d’un cadre naturel. La nature s’est fondue dans ses sentiments ; elle l’enveloppe, la décore et amplifie ses pensées. C’est une toile moderne, si tant est que la définition de l’art moderne est de reconnaître les émotions subjectives de l’artiste plutôt que de faire état des faits éternels. Le rival de Gainsborough, Sir Joshua Reynolds, était le champion des valeurs permanentes et classiques. Gainsborough, au contraire, peignait les plaisirs éphémères et inattendus, comme ce qui scintille sur les jupons de Perdita, ou encore le ruban bleu sur sa poitrine laiteuse. |
