You Have Several Options | Jun 16, 2003 |
You have several options to block popups and remove software that allows them to come up. I use more than one of the options below: - Get Norton Internet Security 2003 (it will block ads and popup windows) - Get Ad-aware 6 from http://lavasoft.element5.com/support/download - this program will scan your pc and remove any spyware/ad software that makes the popups ... If it is affecting the pleasure of using Google | Jun 16, 2003 |
Does the annoying pop-up thing also affect your Google site? I had a parasite called HuntBar which acted as you describe. The notable thing about it was that whenever I tried to open Google.com (i.e. English), it decided to go for the Brazilian or Japanese version. It also showed a panel to the left with 5 search items (this has nothing to do with Google). So I had the pop-ups and the funny Google situation. I found a very interesting website that gave very good instructions to remove it. It seems that the standard pop-up removal programs cannot cope with deleting the root cause (i.e. in my case the installation of the HuntBar program). The instructions can be found at: http://doxdesk.com/parasite/HuntBar.html The program that helped me the most was SpyBot (you can download a 15 day trial version). You can find it all over the web. You may already know this but you can also block third-party cookies (Internet Explorer -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Privacy -> Advanced). This will not affect things like ProZ.com because they use First-party cookies. You will get little boxes that pop up when you open certain sites but I think it is worth it. It gives me more control. Also you can always allow a cookie and then it is added as such under the tab Privacy -> Web Sites -> Edit. You can add specific sites here too (either allow or disallow always). ▲ Collapse

Simply go to the 'Web Content' tab under Internet Security options and add ProZ.com. Then set all the attributes to allow everything from ProZ.com
You do not need any software | Jun 16, 2003 |
Hi Marcus: The first thing - you do not need any software to block these pop ups in XP. XP has inbuilt settings to stop them. Go to Control Panel > Administrative tools > Services. From here stop the Messenger Services. Second, I would not recommend doing this. In the first place the reason you're getting these pop ups is that your system is open to outsiders, therefore just stopping the messenger service is not blocking any outsider from accessing any information from your system, which is a much more dangerous thing than (no matter how pestering) these pests (could be.) Therefore in my view you should be fortifying your house instead of focusing on pop ups. Try having a good firewall, but before that you can go to My Network Places > View Network Connections; right click on the icon and go to properties > Advanced; see if you have checked the Internet Connection Firewall box. The solution could be as simple. All best. ▲ Collapse
Messenger Service has nothing to do with Popups | Jun 16, 2003 |
Stoping the Messenger Service will not stop popups. It's something totally different that is built into Windows for a different purpose. Windows does not have anything built in to stop popups. If you want to protect your PC from the outside world, Norton Internet Security comes with a firewall, so if you choose that option, you can enable the Personal Firewall that comes with it. I don't recommend using the Firewall option that comes with Windows XP, it's buggy and crashes often.

Not to start another holy war but I thought I'd mention that Netscape comes with a pop-up control that allows you 1. to disallow all popup windows and 2. to enable popups for selected trustworthy sites (as ProZ). Just trying to be helpful

May I also suggest... | Jun 17, 2003 |
that you run a fantastic freeware called "Spybot - Search & Destroy"?. It tracks spyware on your computer, which is often responsable for pop-ups. Good luck, Rossana

Just search for the location of that file and delete it. For even more peace of mind. ▲ Collapse
Marcus, could you please clarify | Jun 17, 2003 |
Marcus, could you please clarify about the nature of the problem? What I gather from your message is that it's actually messenger spam you're talking about, and not actually pop up ads. Thanks.

Thanks to everybody for your suggestions. I downloaded Lavasoft's Ad-aware 6 as Boyan recommended. It detected about 106 spyware objects in my C and about 3 in my other F drive. Nuked them all but this didn't stop the pop-up ads (albeit the intervals of occurrence widened a bit). I then activated the firewall feature of my Net connection (thanks Rishi!). Rishi, I didn't deactivate the Windows messenger service since I too have read that this would affect my pc's ability to send/receive. This new (clunker) crashes too much as it is.
