I'm a cat lover. I'm absolutely fascinated by these clever, freedom-loving, soft and gentle creatures. I currently have eight of them, all with different personalities. Eight furry companions to brighten my day...

What I'm curious to know is: How do you say "miaow" in different languages of the world?

Looking forward to your answers...

Spanish: miau / Italian: miao Jan 16, 2009

English several spelling are acceptable but I think meow is most common (miaow / miaou/ meaow)

Spanish: miau (verb: maullar)
Italian: miao (verb: miagolare or fare miao)

In Arabic... Jan 16, 2009

...cats begin their miaowing with a different letter from all the cats mentioned above. They say: "Nau, nau" (as in the English word "now").

(By the way Arabic isn't listed in the link provided by Derek, so here's a valuable addition.
I can also see from the list that we share the initial "n" only with Hungarian, Japanese, Latvian and Tagalog. What's the connection I wonder?)

Brazilian cats Jan 16, 2009

I love cats too and have a bunch of them.

I also have dogs and get to see lots of wild animals and birds in the little forest we conserve on a little farm where I live.

Brazilian cats communicate as their Romanian relatives 'miau'. Dogs 'au au'

Now I'm trying to identify birds by their language and habits

Polish cats most often "miau"
but sometimes they also "mrau" (this is more pleasant to listen to in my - catloving - opinion)

Cat Trados on the other hand, luckily makes no noise. That stupid messages like "end of paragraph not found" already are irritating enough.

Mjav in Danish Jan 16, 2009

In Danish they say 'mjav', but as the j is pronounced as a y in English, and the 'v' modifies the vowel, the result is the same.

Stroke your cats from me!

So glad I´m not the only cat lover here! Jan 16, 2009

I see that cats world over say almost the same thing...

Anybody from Asia wants to join? From Africa (other than Arabic-speaking countries - thanks again, Nesrin!)? Other parts of the world not represented here yet?

Now, I'm off to stroke my cats at Christines's request...

Not only I love cats, but I also love all animals, forest and living close to nature - not to mention that Brazil is the country where I left my heart. I soooooo envy you!

Maybe I'll have a chance to meet your cats one day - if you let me, of course.
