Neat solution Mar 10, 2009

Hi Jack

Thr reader is you.

You get an automated message in xml, which is rendered visible by your particular RSS software.

Look for the words: "Here's a screenshot" here http://www.xefteri.com/articles/show.cfm?id=24 to see what it can look like.

A litle popup appears on your screen e.g. "Proz jobs RU>EN Civil Engineering." If you

You get an automated message in xml, which is rendered visible by your particular RSS software.

Look for the words: "Here's a screenshot" here http://www.xefteri.com/articles/show.cfm?id=24 to see what it can look like.

A litle popup appears on your screen e.g. "Proz jobs RU>EN Civil Engineering." If you are interested, you click on the feeds button on your browser and click on the URL of the RSS feed which takes you to the job post.

This way, your mailbox is kept free.

With RSS, you can also "subscribe" to info such as newspapers etc. and it will pop up incoming "feeds" like e.g. "Sky News: Doughty awarded knighthood ..."

You can also use it to selectively read the newspapers. For example, I breeze into The Times daily, the Economist weekly and just skim through the list of single headlines, opening what interests me.

I hope you find it useful.

Cheers
Chris

RSS (abbreviation for Really Simple Syndication) Mar 10, 2009

Jack,

Not a problem. I see that Chris has given an explanation, so I will be a bit more formal.

RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication, a family of Web formats used to publish frequently updated content - such as news headlines or blog entries - in a standardized format that allows users to subscribe to it.

A feed reader (or aggregator) is client software or a Web application that is used to subscribe to and collect syndicated web content in a single location for easy viewing.

Examples of feed readers include:
* Mozilla Thunderbird
* Google Reader
* Opera Mail

Examples of browsers that support RSS feeds:
* Mozilla Firefox
* Microsoft Internet Explorer (7 and above)
* Safari

Wikipedia's comparison of feed aggregators

Let me know if you have any additional questions, comments or concerns.

RSS and profile Mar 10, 2009

Good job Jon.

Ideally my rss subscriptions could also be readable in a dedicated tab of my profile. That is very useful if I am nomadic.

Also, to be perfect beyond perfect, ideally my profile could also give me the option not to see the rss buttons. That would be in a general policy of allowing the user to remove everything that is "noise" for him.

Feed Title without the name of the forum Mar 10, 2009

I have been using a feed reader for some time now (FeedDemon), and after the opening of this thread I subscribed to the "Translator Coop" forum, which for some reason did not work earlier.

In my feed reader, feeds are organized in several directories for the RSS feeds to which I subscribed earlier, e.g.: "ProZ.com: About ProZ.com" (which contains subdirectories for the forums listed under "About ProZ.com"), "ProZ.com: Technical Forums" (containing also subdirectories for the differ

In my feed reader, feeds are organized in several directories for the RSS feeds to which I subscribed earlier, e.g.: "ProZ.com: About ProZ.com" (which contains subdirectories for the forums listed under "About ProZ.com"), "ProZ.com: Technical Forums" (containing also subdirectories for the different forums), etc.

Now, all new feeds that I receive for my earlier ProZ.com subscriptions are displayed by a short title which is the name of the topic only, while new feeds for my new ProZ.com subscriptions are now displaying a much longer title that includes the name of the forum in which the topic has been opened, the name of the topic itself and the title of the newest post in the topic. Although the title of the newest post in the topic might be useful, the name of the forum in which the topic has been opened could, in my opinion, be omitted at least for those who subscribe to an entire forum, because it makes it more difficult to follow and sort the feeds in a reader (e.g. alphabetically). I understand, however, that it might be useful for those subscribing to only one topic to receive new feeds with a title containing the name of the forum.

Other difference noticed: new feeds for my earlier subscriptions appear, when viewed in the feed reader, over the whole page ("user" and "post" columns only are displayed), while feeds for my new subscriptions display the whole width of the site page, which makes the "user" and "post" columns smaller (although the font size is the same). I am not sure what is actually best, maybe I just have to get used to it, but I find it rather distracting to have these three columns displayed instead of only those directly related to the topic. I hope others who might have subscribed to some ProZ.com feeds earlier will comment on this (maybe this is irrelevant and is only related to my feed reader). The ProZ.com site header, however, is something that was really missing in earlier feeds (at least with my feed reader) and is therefore a very nice addition.

Kristina,

That's a good idea; I've placed it on the list of QA items to be resolved in the near future.

Best regards,
Jon

Still getting the forum name, but Mar 12, 2009

I am still getting the forum name in the title of new feeds for the forums to which I subscribed yesterday. Example: "ProZ.com: Translator Coop / New golden stars to acknowledge long term membership".

But since the forum feeds to which I subscribed earlier have not been affected by your new developments on March 9 and continue to be displayed in the "thread name only" format, maybe I just have to unsuscribe to my latest forum feed additions and suscribe again to activate the changes

I will try this later and let you know the results...

Great! Mar 13, 2009

Some months ago I learned what RSS feeds are and started to use them. From that moment, I wondered why Proz didn't include this option. Now it is easier to track a thread. Is Proz staff considering RSS feeds for job postings and Kudoz?

RSS for jobs, KudoZ Mar 13, 2009

Hello Fernando,

Good to hear you're finding them useful. Job feeds are already available (see http://www.proz.com/topic/129625 ), and feeds for KudoZ are on the way.

Best regards,

Jared

Feed title still includes the name of the forum Apr 17, 2009

Jon Peck wrote:

Since the old RSS feeds have suddenly stopped to work, I had to re-subscribe to all forums that I am interested in. When subscribing, the new forum name is added to the feed reader's tree, but all feeds, when updated, are still received with a name in the long format, as follows:

ProZ.com Translator Coop / Forum RSS Feeds for all public forums / Name of new post

Would it be possible to remove the name of the forum ("ProZ.com Translator Coop") from the feed title? This would indeed make it much more easier to follow and sort the different feeds.

Forum title omitted when subscribed to forum May 5, 2009

Based on Kristina's feedback, I have made it so that the forum name will not appear in the title of the RSS items when subscribed to that forum. The title when subscribed to a specific forum is now formatted as "Thread title | Post title". Any further suggestions about improving RSS feeds are welcomed and appreciated.

Best regards,
Matt Petrowski

Thanks, Matt! May 5, 2009

Too bad you're in the US, but if you ever come nearby, I'll buy you a drink!)

It is much more convenient, at least for me, and I really appreciate this small but very significant change. Thanks again!
