Of course I don't know Japanese. But in the case of this novel I read the French version. The hero is called Musahi or Takezo. He specializes in martial arts and changes his name to Takezo or Musahi. At this point of time I no longer remember which is the original name and which is the changed one. The one thing I remmber is that both names have got the same characters, one in Japanese and one in Chinese. The one thing I remmber is that both names have got the same characters, one in Japanese and one in Chinese. This Musahi seems to be a cult figure in Japan and his story has been serialized in the Japanese TV. The diverse characters of this novel have become immortal and the present-day politicians are referred to in terms of these characters. In the course of his life this hero kills a seven year old boy, who was the figurehead leader of a martial arts school and is unable to live down the infamy of this lapse of his.
I would like to get hold of the French translation of this novel as well as its sequel, which I remember was referred to in this book.
Thanks in advance,

Musashi Sep 19, 2003

Hi Narasimhan Raghavan

The only book I know about Musashi is called 'Musashi' and was written by Eiji Yoshikawa. He also wrote a book called 'Taiko', but I am not sure if it's a sequel to 'Musashi'.
This book has been translated into English, (and is available from Amazon), but I don't know whether it's been translated into French or not.
Hope this helps

Greetings

Peter

Thanks Ensor Sep 19, 2003

The author's name rings a bell. I am 90% sure that this is the book I have in mind. When it is translated into English, French cannot remain far behind. I will try my luck at the local Alliance Francaise library. Thanks.

Yes but... Sep 24, 2003

I think I was 16 years old when I read this book, and I knew nothing about Japan. So I don't know if I would like it or not today. But I like the old Musashi movies. Many movies have been based on this novel along the years in Japan. By the way we had a discussion on Musashi a few weeks ago in the French forum : http://www.proz.com/?sp=bb/viewtopic&post=81368#81368. (The discussion ... See more

Please take a look (although we're not always serious on this forum... so it's at your own risks...)

Thanks Alain Sep 25, 2003

When I started this thread, I thought about you. I was sure you would be ready with the information I required. In fact when I saw the discussion not picking up for the first 3 days, I thought that this thread was going to be forgotten with the accumulation of later threads.
Coming to Musashi, is it true that the two names Musashi and Takezo have the same characters (alphabets)?

Thanks for the French thread you mentioned. I found it quite interesting. Not only the reference to Musashi but also the original thread os Sandra. I will be spending more time reading the various exchanges.
I was 47 years old when I read Musashi's story 10 years back. Even though many more books came up to claim my attention, this is one of the rare books, which has a place in my heart. The evolution of the protagonist reminded me of those in Tamil novels penned by Kalki, who by the way is fond of D'Artagnan and has fashioned two of his heros out of this immortal hero.
One more thing Alain. I went to the Amazon pages. It seems the mode of payment is by credit card, which I do not have. Nor is it easy to pay in dollars from India. Usually I place orders with my local publisher, who procures it for me and receives payment in rupees from me. For this purpose, the publisher has to be provided with the name and address of the publisher or his website address as well as the ISBN number and price. Could you help by giving this information. Thanks in advance Alain.
Regards,
Narasimhan Raghavan

Yes, the two characters of his name can be read either Takezo or Musashi.

As for the information on the book in French, here is what I found :

diteur : J'ai lu (7 juin 2000)
Collection : J'ai lu
Format : Broch - 856 pages
ISBN : 2290300543
Dimensions (en cm) : 3 x 11 x 18

Good luck !
