I have been using PayPal for over a year now and am quite happy with it. The only advice I would have is to make sure that you open a PayPal account with the same exact name that appears on your bank account (where you may wish to transfer the balance). I opened my PayPal account with my shortened first name and one last name instead of my full name (first name and two last names, as per my bank account) and I had to go through a lot of trouble to prove that I was indeed the same person when I w... I had to fax them photocopies of several documents where my full name appeared.
Apart from that, I have had no other problems. In fact, I prefer this method of making and receiving payments. I don't have to worry about converting currencies and the payment is instantaneous. I don't mind paying their fees for the sake of convenience. ▲ Collapse

Not answering email queries is the height of arrogance. Getting only moronic robot emails is adding insult to injury. From the various postings I gather that one's Paypal account is set for once and one is left to one's own devices. As long things go smooth everything is ok. No doubt all these information will be somewhere available, but in an extremely small print. In our place we call this misleading a potential account holder.
Having vented steam, let us examine the question of money transfers. In India there is a thing called demand draft. The payer gets a demand draft issued in favour of the payee and makes it payable in the city of payee's choice. For this he is debited by the bank issuing DD. The DD is usually crossed account payee and sent to him by courier. The payee gives this DD to his bank, not necessarily the branch of the DD issuing bank. His bank collects the payment by local clearance and pays into the payee's account at no charge. Now, can't this be extended to international operations too? For example my city has branches of many foreign banks such as Grindlay's bank, Citibank, Bank of America and so on. And these branches participate in our local clearance operations. An American client has just to take a banker's certified cheque for the amount of my bill from any bank, having a branch in my city. What can be simpler? And send the certified cheque by courier.
I request input on this point.

Very interesting option. After reading your post, I went to the Visa website to look for info on how to become member as independent contractor, but everything I saw (even for "small businesses") was about getting Visa cards to *purchase* items, not receive payment. Before I write Visa for info, can you tell us more about how you use Visa?

I have just contributed to another thread about PayPal Premium accounts. I shall repeat the main point I made there: never leave significant amounts of money lying around in your PayPal account and never give them the means to deduct money from your bank account. Also, if you feel you must have a premium account for the purposes of accepting credit card payments, make it separate from your main account, or the ludicrously high fees will be deducted from ALL payments.

I have had my account frozen, and had to jump through hoops to re-activate it. I have also heard of people being asked to refund money paid to them because the person who paid them had allegedly obtained the credit fraudulently, etc.
It's worth it for the convenience, but you should take the simple precautions mentioned in my first paragraph to avoid major rip-offs. ▲ Collapse

Paypal may not be a fraudulent company but they can make your life hell when you try to withdraw your money. Here is what happened to me:
(1) I opened an account with them back in 2002 - easy as pie!
(2) I received several payments into my Paypal account - easy as pie!
(3) I wanted to withdraw that money - very, very complicated... In fact, as soon as I wanted to take money out of my account they froze it. (3) I wanted to withdraw that money - very, very complicated... In fact, as soon as I wanted to take money out of my account they froze it. I had to chase after them for several weeks (via both e-mail and phone) before I finally managed to speak to someone who could help and who agreed to release my funds after the expiration of a 6 months "security period".
Their explanation: "We do not authorize people residing in unsafe countries (such as Peru) to use our services." (I don't remember the exact wording they used, but this was the argument they used).
I ask myself: If that's their policy, why the hell did they let me open the account in the first place???
My conclusion: 1. They are either utterly disorganized or they are cheaters. 2. They certainly don't live up to their claim of providing an "easy and affordable way to receive payments" - at least not in my case...
