Two-column translations? Thread poster: Elliot Everett (X)

Hello all. I received an rtf file for translation in columns. It is set up like this:
ID (no.) Spanish English Comment Status
It is populated with ID (segment numbers) and the source text (Spanish in this case).
I use Wordfast Classic and have OmegaT installed on my machine and would like to use a CAT tool for this job. Is this possible with the tools I have?

It looks like a DVX External View file. If there are no translations in the target column simply copy source segments to target . Then copy the target column into a new Word file, translate and clean. Finally copy it to the original file.
If there are translations in the target column, same method may work or you can ask for a Trados RTF External View (for translation with WF) or Xliff External View document (for Omega) from your client. That's what I did last time I translated a similar document. However if there's alot of matches in the target part I'm not sure if it is as applicable

When working with DVX EV files, be careful with the codes, e.g. {1}, {2}, do not delete codes and do not change the order of codes.

I do a lot of these column files for a client and I copy the source segment to the target segment as others have suggested, but then mark all columns other than the target text as untranslatable (using marching red ants in Word 2003, or 25% grey highlight in Word 2007, activate "Use red ants/grey highlight as untranslatable attribute" under Segments in Wordfast setup and then translate as normal. Wordfast will skip the highlighted segments and just move to the target segments. This has the advan... This has the advantage that you don't need to create a new file and it makes it easier for proofreading as you can print the file off (or view it on screen) with the source and target text next to each other straightaway.
If there are any entries in the target column, I usually ask my client to send me an "all" file showing all entries and an "empty" file which only shows me the entries I need to translate. I then work with the all file open on my second screen so I can ensure consistency. Otherwise, if there aren't many target entires, you could always make those untranslatable too, but that can be fiddly if there are many of them.

Thanks Claire. I will try that next time.
By the way, I now see the beauty of the two-column system, especially when it comes to Powerpoint presentations, text boxes, etc. I can focus more on translating itself, and not on format editing.

Yes, they are a huge boon. A lot of the files I do start life as pdf files so the client has had the arduous task of converting them - no formatting issues for me whatsoever. I do usually have the pdf files open in case of any queries, but on the whole I can concentrate on straight translating, which usually means huge time gains.
