My husband is a teacher so his vacation times are set by the educational calendar and we have to follow that. Additionally, there is a music camp which we like to attend each year, and the date for that is a factor we bear in mind when holiday planning.

I avoid the height of summer in hot countries and tend to go there in autumn, whereas with other countries it might be best to be there while it's warm

... who say they never take vacations. Even though I've screwed up a few of my own vacations by accepting jobs that made it impossible to enjoy my time away fully, I always manage to get a few days here and there with no work (and no connectivity)

I tend to avoid rainy seasons: have plenty of rain all year round at home! I also try to get as much daylight as I can, no Arctic circle for me in December. For short breaks/weekends, air/train fares are the most relevant factor.

I take time off whenever I need it or feel like it. I don't exaggerate and do take into account my workload, but if I want to take time off, I will. I work very hard, so I also deserve time off.

I avoid taking vacation in July and August, because those are the busiest month in the year. But that's fine because I don't like very hot weather, so I usually go on vacation in May-June or September-October. And then, air fares can also help decide the very days when I'll be travelling.

I can basically take time off whenever I want (which isn't usually often), so it really depends on family and friends who have a more rigid vacation schedule. Apart from other people, I suppose the most important factor would be whether I can afford it, or if I actually want a vacation at all. I fell off my new bike the other day (it brakes too fiercely compared with its predecessor and catapulted me over the handlebars) and landed on my face so am having a mini-break ... Workload is a part of it, but the WEATHER is important. You don't realise it until you've been stuck in an Asian monsoon with no planes taking off just because it was "summer" in some other part of the world.
