When I click ALT+CTRL+DEL i can see that SDLTradosStudio.exe uses 800 000 KB of memory. I am working on a large file, but since I'm not finished with the job I fear that the file will crasch. Using the FL edition of Trados Studio I cannot break the file in two.

Or is this possible?

My PC use 32 bit Win 7 with 4 GB RAM. Should I switch to 64 bit Windows?

Now it's less Jan 20, 2012

After doing a "Pre-translate file" it dropped to 350 000 KB. Don't tell me why? Is the memory usage based on how many hours I have used the programme?

SDL Big RAM Eater 2011... Jan 20, 2012

Studio 2011 eats too much memory, more than S2009.
E.g., now, I have a quite small 13000 words DOC file (600 kB, 4 MB SDLXLIFF) and S2011 happily eats slightly above 400 megs of RAM, it's completely crazy...

I dunno, I have Pro...

Probably if you split the file manually, it should work.
Of course, you should preserve the file structure (headers etc.)
You'll need a good text editor like UltraEdit or Notepad++.

It will have no impact on Studio itself.
As a 32-bit application Studio can use "only" 2 GB of RAM.
But you may note a big difference in the overall machine performance/responsivity if you add more RAM.

IMO it's an ideal scenario for CAT hoping.
This kind of big files should be processed in a data base powered tools.
For the same file DVX2 eats 50+ megs, memoQ should eat a similar amount of RAM.

Cheers

Memory leaks... Jan 20, 2012

It seems some not used modules were unloaded.

Yep, it seems S2011 experiences some memory leaks.
It makes sound to restart it from time to time.

Cheers

Thanks Jan 20, 2012

Thanks GG,

I will restart from time to time. Some times the CAT tools increases the time spent on a project. On the other hand: It would be a nightmare in for instance MS Word handling a 30 K+ word large file

Cat hopping for large files... Jan 20, 2012

True, it would be completely unmanageable...

I did a lot of bilingual DOC files like that but I always used Déjà Vu or, recently, in some special cases, memoQ.

Cheers

SDL BeGlobal Community Jan 20, 2012

Seem to be some kind of bug in SDL BeGlobal Community. I tried this today, and it's also the first time I have experienced any problems.

After removing this my system use less RAM, and seem more stable.

Can we test your files? Jan 31, 2012

Hello Ivan,

We are investigating this issue where you have reported that the system has difficulty running a 30K+ word file. We tested the case with a 240K word file (more than 70 pages, more than 5000 segments) . It consumed around 550M. You also reported that the memory issue might be related to BeGlobal. Hello Ivan,

We are investigating this issue where you have reported that the system has difficulty running a 30K+ word file. We tested the case with a 240K word file (more than 70 pages, more than 5000 segments) . It consumed around 550M. You also reported that the memory issue might be related to BeGlobal. We also tested the case by creating two projects (one with Google Translation and one with BeGlobal), the Google project actually consumed more memory, but we could not find significant memory consumption for BeGlobal.

There are a lot of things that could be different of course, so I wondered if it would be possible for you to share your Project with us so we can test again using the same scenario you have? If so you can drop me an email at [email protected] and I can provide ftp details for the project.

Kind regards

Paul

Not only Word Jan 31, 2012

The file was a sdlxliff, and it was a merged file (most likely carried out in the Pro version?). The merged files was originally 39 000 KB (untranslated) and inside you could find three word files, six ppt files and one tag-file.

I cannot send you this because it would be a breach of my non-disclosure agreement with my customer.

Everything worked out by removing add ons like BeGlobal and/or Google Translate. After doing the memory usage was stable (and not too high).
