Tuesday, November 27th this year was dubbed "Giving Tuesday" by some, an opportunity to give to charity and otherwise help others.
To mark the occasion, ProZ.com announced that it would match donations made to Translator's without Borders' Fund a translator campaign.
Some background:
Translators without Borders' first healthcare translators training center is in Nairobi, Kenya (Translators without Borders Kenya). Training started in March, 2012.
Keeping the training center open and helping more professionals become translators in Kenya and beyond, requires funds. A physical location needs to be maintained, a local full-time instructor needs to be employed, and technology and Internet access for the trainees provided.

I am pleased to announce that, through generous donations and the donation-matching, 6,000 USD was raised-- that is enough to fund 6 translators for an entire year.
Thank you to all who participated in the donation drive, both on and off ProZ.com. Thanks also goes out to all the professionals who have donated their time, work, and other resources to Translators without Borders and to other humanitarian causes throughout the year. It is especially rewarding to work for a community that is able and willing to provide so much assistance to those in need.

Hi Jared,
You can help! Your $1,000 contribution will fund a translator for an entire year as well as a computer for the translator and Internet access! That is just $83 a month.
Could you give some breakdown about the cost of computer, software, internet access, training costs, and the amount of money that the translator gets in his/her hand?
Could you also clarify what the translator is expected to participate in? E.g., X hours of training (as trainee), Y words of translation, etc.?
Is there a contract to be signed with the translator? If there is, could you or TwB publish the template?

She mentioned that the name of the Fund-a-Translator program could be deceiving: TwB did not actually provide funds for the translators. Instead, their *training* was funded – so the gathered money was used to pay to rent the space, the internet connection, the computers, and the full-time trainer.

I asked Rebecca to provide a breakdown of the costs so that as a potential donor I can take an informed decision whether I want to give money for this program or something else. As charities have rather strict reporting requirements, the officially submitted/published data would certainly suffice.
Rebecca confirmed that TwB had no problems with sharing that information, and that TwB strived to be transparent. She mentioned that the report would be ready in April.
I recontacted her in May, asking for the requested information. I received no reply.

I would appreciate if ProZ, a major stakeholder in TwB, could help in clarifying this issue.

We may be operating under a different understanding of "major stakeholder". ProZ.com has provided, and will continue to provide, support to TwB and other causes. Sharing more information than that given at the links I provided above is up to TwB. If the information already provided is not compelling enough and the detailed information you seek in order to make the decision is not forthcoming, there are many other worthy causes that would benefit from the donation as well.... What I meant is that ProZ is an essential pillar of TwB. ProZ conceived a screening platform to TwB. ProZ's CPN program (along with ATA certification or being a Lionbridge translator) grants translators immediate pass through TwB's screening process. Enrique is a member of TwB's board – previously Henry was. TwB gets a prominent place in ProZ's newsletters etc.
Many ProZ members (in particular, members of the CPN) volunteer for TwB; the badge that is displayed on many member's profile shows that the site acknowledges this. Without ProZ volunteers, TwB would probably be able to handle a fraction of its current volume.
TwB's translator training program has received quite some exposure, and I followed it with particular interest because I also mentor career-starting translators. The idea that translators raise funds for translators so that they can start their career is very interesting. ProZ, by giving this idea exposure, can make a huge difference.
That is why I feel that sorting out this issue is not ProZ's responsibility - but it is in ProZ's interest, or at least it is in ProZ members' interest. Funding translators' training (through paying the trainer's expenses) is a cause that many translators may find worthy as well. But it is not the same as funding the translators' work. And if the funding is for a combination of the two, then that piece of information is relevant.
But you are perfectly right: it is up to TwB to clarify this.
In the meantime, I received a private reply from Rebecca saying that the end-of-year financials were presented to the board, and that a full audit is underway, after which a part of the 2012 results will be made public.

Thanks for your postings, Attila. TwB is a great organization with great people -- from the clients to the founders to the volunteer translators -- and I trust them fully. Given your clarification, I agree that "Fund a translator" was not the right title for this program. Since you have been in touch with Rebecca, I would expect that they would address this. (I'll make sure that Enrique is aware of this thread.)
