I did take on a small job in spite of my intuition once and never got paid for it, however.

because I had a sense that I would not be paid. The email with the job offer claimed to be from a large agency, but on doing a little research I noted that this "agency" appeared to be operating from a small house in the middle of a grotty looking housing estate. I may have been quite wrong, but I'm glad I didn't accept the job.

Intuition is a key component in any decision-making process, including the many choices we make as we are translating. Of course, intuition does need to be balanced with a bit of rational thought, too!

As Alison says, that feeling in your gut is very important. It all boils down to whether you trust who you deal or about to deal with.
30 years in this profession has helped develop that sense, but sometimes you still can't see red lights flashing. After throwing 8 innings of fast balls, some people throw you a curve ball out of the blue.

If everything seems fine on the surface but I have a niggling gut feeling that all is not right, I won’t take on the project. While I usually have no way of knowing if I was right in any particular instance, I’d rather be safe than sorry. To me it’s the same as having a funny feeling about walking down a dark street alone at night; why would I want to put myself at risk?

As soon as I receive "offers" via gmail my gut basically turns 180 degrees and screams: "Nooooooooooo!"

I also sometimes pass them on to friends/colleagues, with the appropriate caveat.
The latest one (just last month) turned out to be a stinker (too technical, awkward format, deadline too short, agency picky...) but my friend was still OK with it because she needed the money.

It's a little bit like that Nigerian lady (no offence to Nigerians on a global level) who regularly offers to transfer $10 million dollars into my account. Something tells me that the transaction parameters aren't quite right.

As the famous quote of "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is"
It's just like this e-mail I got a couple of days ago where they had posted a job (not in Proz) and wanted a quote to translate about 2,000,000 words.
I immediately figured something fishy was going on and of course I nailed it. The "online translation agency" wanted me to pay a 300 dollar fee to buy a membership in order to be able to quote.

Whatever happened to assess an offered job on its merits, on facts?
A properly informed hunch should be supported by some sort of factual motive or else is more akin to superstition.
What's next? A divination ball?
