No, but... Jul 29, 2013

...it depends on what you mean by summer. If you mean all three summer months, definitely no, since July is one of the busiest months of the year for me. If you mean only vacation time, I am "officialy closed" for about 20 days in August, but sometimes I take work with me (much less than usual of course and only in extraordinary situations).

on if there is a lot of work out there

Generally a little more than usual, always depends on the economical situation, etc.

Yes Jul 29, 2013

I generally work during school hours, so the summer holidays can be something of a challenge. This year, we're experimenting with a new routine - the children amuse themselves for the first part of the morning while I work, and then we do things together in the afternoon. If necessary I do another couple of hours in the evening when they have gone to bed. This means that my hours are shorter, though, and it can be a bit stressful if I have a tight deadline impending.

It depends... Jul 29, 2013

In general, I would say that I work less during the Summer months, but last year July and August were my busiest months EVER (in 30 years) and this year July has been quite active so now I wonder if the trend is here to stay!

last summer was quite busy! this summer, a bit quieter, but I did take a few days off because I moved.
It does slow a bit during the summer, especially when everyone goes on vacation at the same time- usually the last two weeks of july.

No snow Jul 29, 2013

Well, it means what's meant by "work". If you mean translating and other paying work, with no snow to clear from steps and car, etc., then there's more "work" during the summer. If you include snow clearing and other activities that winter demands (but doesn't pay), then there's a LOT more work in winter, tying up perhaps an hour per day with non-paying work!

Summer here can get extremely hot and unpleasant Jul 29, 2013

Temperatures can soar upwards of 45 C and it can get very hot in the day even inside the house. I work nevertheless. I have now installed an AC in my room, which helps a bit.

Life's too short to spend sunny days in the office

Things slow down here Jul 29, 2013

Things slow down here in Madrid during the summer period, not in July though usually. Personally, I take on less work in the summer months, simply because it is hard to sleep. You have to sleep with the windows open and some people go to bed late and others get up early, but they all talk and wake you up. Last night, I got to listen to a washing machine too until about 1.30 am. Please...

I work more Jul 29, 2013

Strangely, I always get much more work during summer than any other period. Probably because my corporate clients' in-house translators take vacations, so they outsource more.

Nope Jul 29, 2013

I am based in Florida and there are only two seasons here: summer and not summer.

Where I live the latter lasts anywhere from 45 to 60 days so my answer is definitely:
No, I do not work less during the summer…

Okay, I thought I'd start my post by attempting to be witty. Depending on which side of the Equator you live on, you could say that I have two summers. Since summer in Chile takes place during the northern hemisphere's winter, I usually have plenty to do during my summer.Collapse
