It isn't that important if they do not acknowledge receipt at all, although I appreciate it if they do so fairly quickly - just so I can be sure they have received it.

so we deliver always quite near the deadline. If the agency notifies me of receipt right away, we still have some time to react in case of problems.
But when they never acknowledge receipt, I KNOW the urgency was only in the mind of the PM.

I don't "expect" anything from agencies but hassle, low rates, tight deadlines and demands.
However, I do like all my clients to at least confirm receipt of the delivered documents. Not all of them do, though. When I'm particularly worried that my email might be playing up, I usually insist and ask them repeatedly for acknowledgement in the hope that one day it might (expletive deleted) dawn on them that receipt acknowledgement should be part of their normal procedure.

You cannot expect anything from anyone, but it is a matter of courtesy to do so.

I prefer an immediate confirmation of receipt but I do realise that PMs can be very busy at times. Two of my main customers have a FTP server, so I upload it and know that they have the files.

Sometimes I send the job as an e-mail attachment, requesting a return receipt. It's out of their politeness not to ignore my request.

When files are large, typically video or DTP, I may use some service like YouSendIt/Hightail, WeTransfer, etc. These automatically send the link for downloading to the client, and later a confirmation to me that the addressee has successfully downloaded my file. Sworn translations are in hard copy. Either the client is local and sends some messenger to pick it up at the reception here, or I'll send it by registered mail, which I can track online. Upon confirmation that mail has been delivered, I'll phone/Skype/e-mail them, since I've had too many cases where registered mail was "lost/misdelivered within the building". (In all of them some detective work by my clients' staff found it delivered to the wrong unit in the same building.)

The worst is when I have to upload it to the client's FTP site. Once I uploaded a job one week early, they paid for it as agreed, so I declared the case closed. Three weeks after the deadline, the PM called me, asking when I would have it ready. I gave her the details, as well as the timestamp of the e-mail I had sent her with the upload details and the invoice, which had been paid already. Two more days elapsed until she wrote me back to say that indeed, she had found the file; she had given me incorrect instructions on where I should upload it to, the wrong FTP folder.

So each case is different.

I'd choose the option "Within an hour or two" but I can't expect my clients to do that if it's 2 AM their time.

I give them some time, and if they don't confirm I'll prompt them, because I had a couple of instances where they had not received it i.e. it had ended up in spam or something.

If I've uploaded a 20 MB file, say, and I can see only 0 MB as its size, then I'll send a high priority e-mail (you know, the one preceded by an ! exclamation mark) to get their attention and prompt them to check receipt and the need f

So, an acknowledgement really is not necessary in these cases.

If you're working with international clients residing in other time zones than your own and expect them to reply within an hour or two, you're being unrealistic... If I haven't received client confirmation of a delivered file/project with 24 hours, I usually send them a reminder by email. I recommend that you do the same.

The agencies I have worked for so far have always confirmed receipt immediately so maybe I'm just spoiled.
