At the beginning (some 30 years ago), I worked once or twice through the night having bitten off more than I could chew and the consequences were disastrous quality-wise. I do work quite often until 11 or 12 pm when a translation is flowing well and I like getting up very early in the morning to revise, but that’s all. No all-nighters at all!

I used to do this (on a planned basis) from time to time when I was still in my 40's but now, fast approaching the age of 60, the flesh is no longer willing. However, at times when I have a heavy workload, I try to get up at five in the morning and put in an 11-12 hour working day. I find that 'early to bed, early to rise' is a better maxim nowadays.

In fact, I just did a couple of days ago.
And believe it or not, I enjoy having the freedom to be able to do that... and then organize the next day(s) accordingly

Simply because, in my case, it wouldn't be productive. The quality would be terrible. I never "studied" all night for exams either. Get up very early, yes. That's much better for me.

I might stay up late or get up early, but never work all night. There's no sleeping the next day when you've got children. Perhaps I might if I lived alone, but it's probably not so good for health and stress levels anyway, not to mention quality of work.

I find staying up to finish the work far easier than getting up early as I'm a night owl and more fully alert at night than early am. Anyway, no distractions at night so can often work better. That said, if time allows, I like to have a fresh look over it after a nap.

I did sometimes at the beginning when I bit off more than I could chew. Now I tend to finish by 9 pm at the latest as I don't function properly after a day working and it's best to get up very early instead.

No, because I just can't concentrate and therefore can't guarantee quality. I do sometimes work late, maybe until midnight, but then I have to go to bed as I start to write gibberish. I work best in the morning.

I couldn't agree more with Georgia!
I get up early in the morning if I need to, but never stay up all night - quality would be awful.
I think having to work through the night (not by choice) shows poor time-management skills. It might happen at the beginning of your career, but you should definitely be able to improve your judgment and time management as you progress in your career.

In all honesty, I'm a night person and I find myself to be generally more productive later as opposed to earlier. Additionally, I have no children so I can be flexible and, when your clients are from as far afield as the US and India, it is sometimes beneficial to be able to say that you'll work into the small hours before catching up on sleep at another point.

I have done so but it's been a while....usually for a deadline in China or Japan which is 12 hours ahead. I am also a night person and have no kids, so i can work late if i need to. Many clients are on Euro time so I sometimes work late, but i don't like to do it too often, it kind of screws up my sleep!

i think to work overnight occasionally should be quite ordinary as translators are not only serving local companies but also clients in other countries. also, we might need to meet tight deadline from time to time.

Well, there's nothing much on earth that will get me up early, so working until it's done is the better option for me. But working until 2 a.m. gets harder as you get older. I'd waited for an urgent job all day but it only arrived at 5 p.m. I actually hoped they'd refuse the surcharge and sort out a new deadline but apparently it really was urgent.
