Hi there,
I am thinking of investing in a translation memory tool. I have always done all my translations manually and I don't know much about these tools. I have briefly tried Wordfast but found it rather difficult to operate. Can anyone advise?
Thanks

I think it's safe to say that CAT tools generally take time getting used to. In that respect, it is my impression that they're more or less the same. But patience is rewarded in the end. I'm sure you'll agree some day.

Another aspect is chosing a CAT tool. This is a very hot topic here at Proz.com and is likely to trigger yet another fierce cat fight between passionate supporters of the respective tools.

In my opinion, we as translators are not always in the position of chosing the most user-friendly tool but must take into consideration which CAT tools is the most widely used by your clients.

At the moment, Trados seems to be the most widely used translation tool in the business. But special conditions may apply in your case.

About Trados vs. Wordfast:

And why not pay attention to a new CAT-tool: OmegaT
It's Open-source (free!):

http://www.omegat.org/omegat/omegat.html
In order to work with this tool, you will need to download some stuff (for free):
Java: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html
Openoffice: http://www.openoffice.org/

Some comments on OmegaT: http://www.your-translations.com/translation-tools-for-translators/computer-aided-translation/omegat.htm

Trados cannot be used on Mac OS, neither Linux. Wordfast and OmegaT are completely compatible...

As Jorge says; it's up to each of us to choose what we like...

Hope this helps.

Joris

Immeasurable thanks to Joris Bogaert, he deserves a diamond star Sep 14, 2005

I looked for a free CAT software entire month unsuccessfully.
I do not have appropriate words to express my thanks to Mr.Joris Bogaert from Belgium. If I were a boss in this site administration, I awarded him a diamond star to his platinum diploma. Let's consider seriously to correct, develop, and, finally to implement this rough idea. Probably, it is not new so I am not patenting it. There, in proz, are plenty of good personalities helping all community who deserve some way or another to

Try again. Wordfast is one of the simplest CAT tools that I have every tried, and if you can't get the hang of WF, you'll probably struggle with others too.

But here's a thought: the first few hours are always difficult. Give it another try.
