Hi all,
I was wondering what would be acceptable rates for translation of subtitles for someone who has no experience whatsoever in subtitling. Do you get paid per subtitle or per word? Please advise!

I don't know what the going rate in your pair is, but you usually charge per minute of film.

The rates are often per subtitle or per word. I did a test (last year) for a well-known Italian based agency, which seems to be always needing freelancers while paying least.;) All went well until they revealed their rates, which came to about US$(not EUR) 0.042 / word. I am under the impression that it varies how subtitling agencies pay. Some pay per minute, some per hours, some pay per word, some per subtitle, and there are probably also other ways of doing it.
The disadvantage being paid by minute or per hour, is that you will not get paid for the additional time if it takes more time than the agency estimates. If you are paid for 2 hours, and you spend 4 hours due to complex terminology etc, well, you are still paid for ... See more Hi Evelyn!

The company I work for pay by the subtitle (i.e 2 lines of text in this case), and the pay is in my opinion rather good compared to other agencies (USD 0,3 per subtitle).
Let's hope that the subtitling industry value the work of subtitlers more in the years to come - we are as a matter of fact an important source for teaching kids how to read (I myself learned to read this way ).

Hi, Olga.
It's easy to calculate. If you charge per subtitle you know the average number of subtitles a feature has (I think it's 1300) as well as the average duration of a feature (the same can be calculated for 30 minute or 60 minute materials). If the client will ask for a per minute rate, they will specify the duration of the material in minutes. It's simple math to just calculate your per minute rate starting from your prefered per subtitle rate, it should be the same for you to charge per minute or per subtitle.
It's best to have these rates already calculated so that when an offer comes your way, you should be able to provide an accurate and prompt quote.
