hello, I have to do a comparison work about Trados 6.5, SdLX and DejaVuX. Which one suits you best and why?
What are the major advantages and disavantages of these CAT tools, according to you, and why?
Thank you for your help!

Why has the "CAT Fight" been discontinued? Nov 30, 2005

"The CAT center is undergoing an update." That's all I've seen for the last months. Wordfast 4 seems to be the only tool with ratings but I'm sure the large majority of Wordfast users has moved on to Wordfast 5. Upgrading was free.

I really liked the former Cat Fight tool. It gave freelancers valuable information about the usefulness and the installed base of the many tools around.

Kind regards,
Gerard

The tool that goes by the name of "GeoWorkZ - Translation Workspace" has one review and five stars (the maximum). It also has five stars for ease of learning. The review was written by Gisela Donnarumma, and guess what, she works for Geoworkz, a division of Lionbridge.

I was under the impression the "Software comparison tool" was supposed to host reviews by translators, not shameless plugs by employees of the companies that make these tools. Was I mistaken?

Review hidden Dec 6, 2012

Domanique - you're right that the review is from an individual associated with the manufacturer or that tool. I have hidden the review.

I am not sure precisely how we will proceed, but perhaps we could permit this type of review but then have it tagged "reviewer maybe affiliated with this tool" as the content/information may be of interest/value to some. You are not wrong and that's not the only case. Heartsome got 2 five star reviews from employees.

Rodolfo

In my opinion, such reviews should be allowed to remain, but there should be a field that shows whether the person is associated with the software or the company. Even previous associations should be mentioned (so that would have implications for Heartsome, won't it?).

This will make it possible for people who are from tiny villages where you can't trust the opinion of someone who is involved in the development of something to read the reviews, without infringing on the pleasure of those of us who have no such superstitions.

If you do that, you may have to make a special decision about associations for opensource projects or for projects that allow volunteer participation in the development of the software or its official documentation.

Portal meaning of "review" Dec 7, 2012

Rodolfo Raya wrote:

When I first heard about the reviews, I was expecting something with more body.

These "reviews" used on the CAT tool comparator are often simply comments. You can't call that a review... oh, well, I suppose you can. Such comment-based "reviews" work great for portals where users made use of a product or service once or twice (e.g. accommodation or restaurants) but for the CAT fight such comments are not really useful if they replace real "reviews". I don't mind having them there, but they are "comments" or "first impressions", not "reviews".

Reviews value, tagging employee Dec 7, 2012

We will allow these type of reviews, but then identify or flag them as being from someone that is associated with that product, and we will be giving the community of users an option to "flag" a review as potentially from an employee of that tool manufacturer or in some way affiliated with the manufacturer.

Sam - you're right the reviews so far include many that are more comments or commentary than full review. A full in depth review would be of greater benefit to the community at large, but the comment and quick reviews are still valuable data points for translators to consider. It is hoped that more in-depth reviews will be created, and as they are more valuable to users, they will be "thumb'd up" indicating that, that review is more helpful, which will push that review towards the top of the reviews for that tool.

Thanks for all the feedback and continued interest in the software comparison tool.

TransAdvisor Dec 12, 2012

LOL. If you use TripAdvisor and look at a review in the early stage, there are usually two reviews, 5 and 0 star. One is written by the hotel manager's sister-in-law, goes like "Delightful stay. Charming staff. Fantastic food...". Then a second one like "Horrific place. Roaches in the salad. Bugs in the bed. Avoid at any cost"... written by the hotel-across-the-road's brother-in-law

- yves
heck, where's my half-brother's telephone number now?

Flagging enabled, more reviews needed Dec 24, 2012

Hi Yves - hope you're doing well. You're right that in the early stages aggregate reviews can be easily skewed by those with a vested interest in that tools success, or failure.

We have added the functionality to "flag" reviews as inappropriate, violating site rules, or being from someone that may be associated with that tool (or a competitor with an ax to grind). These reviews for now are being hidden, but will ultimately be highlighted or tagged as being from a person possibly associated with that tool.

We're still making improvements to the system but still need more data entry and more reviews, including more qualitative, substantive reviews.

I will seek to remedy that moving in to 2013.

Thanks

What does it take to make it to the top? Dec 24, 2012

Just curious: there are 8 tools listed as "Top translator software tools":

http://www.proz.com/software-comparison-tool

Then there's a broader range of 22 tools listed here:

What are the criteria used to separate "top" tools from others? In terms of user base, OmegaT and Across (non-top) are definitely bigger than Heartsome and MemSource (top).

Particularly given the fact that OmegaT and especially Across have more user reviews. And not to mention Google Translate. As a Proz heading says: More than 200 million global users click onto Google Translate alone every month.
