Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows what the average conversion rate is between Japanese character counts to English word counts when going from J to E. Thanks.

Hi. Usually it is 2 J=1 E: 1000 J chars = 500 E words. Although it can be somewhat lower (as in less than 500 E words per 1000 J chars), depending on the field. A good rule is 2J=1E.

Or 2,5 Japanese characters=1 English word...

...which is the conversion rate I use myself. I believe this is a quite common way to "convert" the count of Japanese characters to the number of English words.

I think the concensus for the conversion multiplier was 2.5, but see the posts because there are several issues to look at. ▲ Collapse

I just came across this thread today. I am a newcomer to Japanese - English translation and I decided to browse on Proz. I wanted to know what I should charge per word and how to count the words in the first place so thanks everyone, especially Katalin who has been very informative
