Hello everyone, I am trying to work with Trados 6.5 under Vista. I still have a dongle but when I try to open a TM Trados tells me to install the dongle which I already did. I can't find anything on the SDL Trados website about possible implications of using vista. Seems nearly every piece of software now needs to be upgraded to be compatible with vista. This could become quite costly. Has anybody had similar experiences? ... See more Hello everyone, I am trying to work with Trados 6.5 under Vista. Seems nearly every piece of software now needs to be upgraded to be compatible with vista. This could become quite costly. Because of the way Trados works, it is very dependent on MicroSoft and any changes MS make in Windows. You need SDL Trados 2007, available in March. Vista-compatible, MS Office 2007 compatible, plus some other new features. | | | Hipyan Nopri Indonesia Local time: 04:32 Member (2005) English to Indonesian + ... The translation software providers seem to keep trying to make translators trapped in continuous and inevitable yearly updates and upgrades. This case appears to be similar to antivirus software. Users have to update/upgrade their old software because numerous virutic programmes are produced every year. What can we do to escape the trap smartly? | | | Marc P (X) Local time: 23:32 German to English + ...

Hi all, Let's not confuse MS Vista and Office 2007 here. I haven't installed Vista, so I cannot check myself, but the problem reported by Hermann sounds like a dongle driver issue. Assuming that is the case, the (free) software that controls the dongle needs upgrading, but not Trados. Office 2007 is another story, as the Office file formats and macro language have changed, which requires a redesign of the tools to go with it. Personally, I won't insta... Assuming that is the case, the (free) software that controls the dongle needs upgrading, but not Trados. Cheers for looking at this. Let it be a warning for everyone and stay clear of vista! The same dongle works perfectly well on another computer. I wasn't planning either to get vista but this was an emergency buy and the **** computer already had vista installed. It might be possible to get vista removed and xp loaded as vista is i.m.h.o. not **** fit for purpose! Norbert | | | Probably a driver problem | Feb 7, 2007 |
I just heard in the radio that there are many driver problems with Vista, and you should wait some months before using it. | | | Kevin Harper United Kingdom Local time: 22:32 German to English + ... Third Party Driver | Feb 7, 2007 |
I believe the dongles are provided by a third party, and they have a website where you can get drivers (and they may have one for Vista). Unfortunately, I've forgotten the website address. On the other hand, the latest version of Trados does provide a few new features that you might find useful compared with version 6. The one I find the most useful is consulting multiple Multiterm glossaries on the fly. | |

Partition for Vista | Feb 7, 2007 |
Hi! I've checked with some of the developers of Vista and they've told me not to install it on my "main partition", that is, keep your actual OS and, if you want to try Vista, make a new partition for it (that works for me, so far). They've also confirmed Vista presents a lot of driver problems so far, so they have also recommended not to install it on the main partition until SP2 is released. Traps once again | Feb 7, 2007 |
This is not the software industry building up traps for us translators. These are we, who are keen to try everything new and - if it is free - even a smallest gadget on our PCs. Never change a running system - don't you know this saying? This does not necessarilly mean never to upgrade, but upgrade frist, when you are sure everything is working. Just on a side note: if you play with your production machine and install software just for fun or for testing, don't blame the others. Blame only yourself. If you really need to test anything, use another computer (but not your production machine) or a virtual machine. As for the dongle problem: just upgrade to a soft-key license or to a newer version of Trados with soft-key license. This has a lot of advantages, and the biggest is, that you may install the software on your desktop at laptop at the same time, although you are entitled to use only one copy at the time, and will not need to take care about yoir dongle anymore. Kind regards Jerzy ▲ Collapse | | | Not just partition, but different HD | Feb 7, 2007 |
Sorry, when I talked about "partition" on my other post I was actually meaning a different HD As Jerzy says, playing with the production machine is not a good idea (specially with MS)

Jerzy's comment reminding us how careful we need to be with our technical tools reminded me of how remarkably "multi-talented" we (technical) freelance translators need to be nowadays. We need to be: 1 - linguists 2 - specialists in at least one technical field 3 - business entrepreneurs (which includes marketing, if we really want to get some customers, accounting/taxes bookkeepers, etc.) 4 - our own IT technical support (including hardware AN... Jerzy I am not in the habit either to try everything new. This was an emergency buy after arriving at "my retreat" by the sea away from the crowds. The above events unfolded when my production machine went down. I have since returned the new computer and swapped it for one with xp. The other one is in the clinic and will soon be fighting fit to serve as a viable backup to the "main machine". As fas as vista is concerned I think I can resist and wait a little longer! Cheers Norbert

Jerzy Czopik wrote: Sorry if I did upset you in any way. No, I am not upset. I was just a bit stressed out by it all. Now I can enjoy my retreat. Being a dongle user shows - I believe - that I don't follow the latest fads. I am quite happy with it and would miss it. And I think the name dongle is also so cute it would be a shame to lose it.
