Dear members,
Site members have often complained of a lack of opportunities for training in tools and techniques related to their work. The popularity of training sessions held at past conferences confirms the need for greater access to trainings for freelancers.

Site members have often complained of a lack of opportunities for training in tools and techniques related to their work. The popularity of training sessions held at past conferences confirms the need for greater access to trainings for freelancers.
Facilitating trainings is in line with the site's mission of providing translators, interpreters and others within the language industries with tools and opportunities for networking and professional improvement.
In order to address these needs, a training solution and site area are being developed to make training more accessible to ProZ.com members and other users, while providing opportunities for experienced trainers to more frequently give sessions, and to profit from doing so.
A program now being developed will feature paid seminars to provide training for translators, interpreters and others within the language industries. These sessions, which will take place over 1 to 2 days, will be delivered by professionals with proven expertise in their fields.

Dear Leonardo,
This looks like an excellent idea. However, I wonder if Proz would also want to look into providing training opportunities online (through perhaps the same expert trainers) on different topics like computer software, CAT-tools training, voice recognition software, and such.
For many of us it is not possible to attend trainings in person or we are located in countries where it is unlikely that actual trainings will ever be organised.

This looks like an excellent idea. However, I wonder if Proz would also want to look into providing training opportunities online (through perhaps the same expert trainers) on different topics like computer software, CAT-tools training, voice recognition software, and such.
For many of us it is not possible to attend trainings in person or we are located in countries where it is unlikely that actual trainings will ever be organised.

I believe this is an excellent idea but I agree with Lucinda, do not let if fall short and try to organize online training sessions. There are thousands of seminars and courses throughout the world but it is not possible to attend in person. Those of us who need to accrue education hours for recertification would appreciate economic online courses that would allow us to do it without going broke or, worse yet, not do it at all.

An online training will never ever give you what you can achieve in a human leaded hands-on training on site.
We are now holding a series of Trados trainings in various polish cities. In general, after three sessions I dare to say it is a big success.
As far I understand this very new ProZ idea the trainings shall be provided where the members have their location - so not you will have to come to the training, but the training will come to you. I was thinking about the WordFast training in Nice.
However, I note that there are two levels of fee. The normal fee is €250, but for those using their French government -sponsored training stipend to pay for the training (FIF-PL), the cost is €375 including tax. Please could someone explain this?

Sorry, Jerzy, but if I live in Miami and the training is in San Francisco, Washington, Chicago or New York (as most are), the need for travelling is very big and I will not be able to do it: plane fare, transportation, hotel and meals, plus the cost of the training. If I want to do that 2, 3, or 4 times a year, there go my profits. Take the TRADOS training example you brought up. While you travel to one of your cities I could follow the same training from across the ocean (of course, in English, not in Polish). Of course, it would never be the same as being there but it still could be worthy for those who cannot just go.
Online training has proven to be an excellent educational tool. What is more, I ignore if they still do but about three years ago I took two Web and telephone based TRADOS and Multiterm training sessions. I fail to see why it would be different for Proz training sessions.

For many (maybe most!) of us living in South America is almost prohibitive to travel for attending courses abroad (too much expensive).
Here in Brazil, if a course is offered, for example in São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, it may be impossible for someone from Manaus or Porto Alegre to attend it, due to the great distance between these cities and, consequently, the amo... Hello,
I am the trainer in Nice and there are a few reasons why it is more expensive. First, as an "organisme de formation", which is allowed to offer training that is fully reimbursed by the government, we have to keep separate accounts, fill out a lot more paperwork for each training participant, and provide year-end financial and pedagogical reports. This adds up to more administrative expenses.
Second, this higher price helps keep the regular price low for attendees from other countries or who don't have access to these funds. Two days of professional training in Nice costs anywhere from €335 to €1320 (CCI - Institut de Formation de l'Entreprise)!
Finally, those translators who are registered in France are not obliged to use their FIF-PL or DIF funds. However, if they don't use them, they lose them at the end of the year. NB: translators have €500 per year to use from the FIF-PL.
I hope this explains the price differential. Please contact me if you have more questions.

I've been very hesitant about getting into CAT tools--so expensive, and none of my clients ever ask for them. I've gone through demos at ATA conferences, but couldn't tell enough about how it would actually work. I'd love to go to a 1- to 3-day training, though. I'll be watching the calendar.
