Hello Patrick Oct 22, 2007

Hi All,

Hi All,

I'm re-opening this thread in view of the new developments in the Greek Forums regarding the quality of the translation of Proz.com into Greek.

I think that even those who took on the translation will agree with me when I say that the translation is a shocking example of machine translation quality.

Furthermore, I am personally concerned about the quality of my own profile page on this site and the fact that anybody who finds the Greek page of my profile in Google may assume that this is the quality of my own personal work and "click away" from it in a second.

The translators who took this on have blamed anything, from ttx files, to the fact that they haven't had time to edit their own work.

My own suggestion is that the Greek translation is not necessary and, if there is no way to pay the good translators to do the translation, the Greek translation should be removed from the site until further notice.

Also, I have pointed out in the Greek forum as well that Proz.com is not a not-for-profit organisation. If it is regarded as necessary for the site to be translated, the time consumed by each translator would not be insignificant. I personally cannot afford to offer my time without payment. It is for advertising reasons that members are paying for Proz.com's services. If these services give the impression that we are bad translators, there is no need for them to exist.

Please discuss this issue with Proz.com staff and the people responsible for the Greek translation. Also, I think that some of us would like to have a say as to whether we would like to be advertised like that. I, for one, refuse to accept the existing situation.

Regards,
Calliope.

Thanks for your concern on the quality of the Greek localized version Oct 22, 2007

Dear Calliope,

Thanks for your interest and concern on the quality of the Greek version of the site. I will appreciate that you email me specific examples of the quality problems to which you refer.

We are thankful to the team of volunteers who have worked in the localization of the site into Greek and several other languages. We apologize if we missed some quality stage in the localization process. Any blame on this respect should be put on ProZ.com and not on the localization team.

We really care about quality, and therefore we take your comments very seriously. In particular we plan to perform a new stage of proof-reading/editing on the Greek version. Any users willing to work on this task are kindly invited to contact me directly or via Support.

Kind regards,
Soledad

Greek Localization - A New Phase Oct 23, 2007

Hello everyone,

With just a small side note on the fact that no Greek team member ever blamed file types or lack of time, and with the vociferous cry that no one used machine translation tools, I would like to extend the call I had also done a few months ago concerning editing and proofreading.

I would like to call the existing members, and extend an invitation for any new members, to join our continued effort in localizing ProZ into Greek. Everyone should realize this

Everyone should realize this is an ongoing effort and not a "set deadline" project. Whoever commits to the project should be helping (to the best their time permits) until we are completed.

As I stated in my message after the Greek version went live, I welcome all comments that have to do with this: pointing out typing errors or even length and of course I welcome any suggestions to alter existing translations.

Soledad, I will email you privately to also see if some of the issues I had opened earlier in the project (namely word/term searching etc) are still open or under development.

Again, my many thanks for your support to the Greek team and let me confirm anew that I still stand behind the project and the people who so far have worked hard on delivering the first phase.

Rgds
