I\'m wondering if anyone else would find it useful to have a dictionary review board that we could access to find out how other translators rate the dictionaries they own/use....something similar to the agency blue board, but for dictionaries.

At least in my area, specialized dictionaries are rarely sold in bookshops or other stores and I\'ve purchased almost all of my dictionaries online. Amazon offers a \"reader review\" function that is helpful, but most dictionaries haven\'t been reviewed yet and on one occassion, I purchased a dictionary based on a reader review and it turned out that the dictionary was not at all what I expected and not even close to what the reader described.
I would find this useful since many dictionaries represent a minor investment and it would be helpful to know if people think a given dictionary is worth the price/if it contains information not found in other reference material, etc.
If other translators are interested, I think this could be a pretty reliable source for dictionary descriptions/reviews. I guess we can always post to the forum or to another translators group to ask about a particular title, but I just think it would be really convenient to have a sort of database to post reviews and consult.

Dear jmf (sorry, I don\'t know your name),
there is a new feature, currently still under testing, where the site members will be able to post references to online resources, such as online glossaries and similar.

I don\'t know if this new feature will be implemented in the format that I described, but your suggestion to add a space for comments and reviews is a very good.
It will make the resources listed much more valuable, as they can be filtered using many visitors/users experience and the best resources could appear in particular evidence, instead of as a flat listing.
I\'m sure the site\'s programmers will consider it, after reading your suggestion.
Thank you Gianfranco

I would find this useful. I usually do try to get recommendations before I buy a dictionary. However, it isn\'t always possible--and I have one dictionary for sure that has proven to be pretty much a waste of time (it wasn\'t especially cheap, either). This is a good suggestion, and it would be great if it could be implemented. | |

I had posted about this awhile back in the suggestions forum, but saw no reponses, so I figured nobody was interested. It will be nice to have a central place to find dictionary/glossary reference.

I would very much like to find more reviews of traditional dictionaries (i.e. commercially published dictionaries). This is the least reviewed translation tool and the most necessary.
I imagine that maintaining such a board detailed, updated and useful will require quite some dedication. I would suggest to dispense largely Browniz to the contributors, and possibly KudoZ to some kind of updates or contributions.

Like Rick, I mentioned this in a forum ages ago (didn\'t see your posting though), but there was no response, and also recently in a survey. Like Cindy, I have expensive and virtually useless dictionaries on my shelves and would really appreciate reading comments before ordering any more dictionaries online or on the phone.
So, yes please!!!! ▲ Collapse | | | Nicole Tata United Kingdom Local time: 13:07 English to German + ...
I, too, have expensive mistakes uselessly cluttering up my shelves …
Wouldn’t it be nice to have a single reliable point of reference that could be consulted before any purchase is made? With specialised dictionaries, particularly if bought via the internet, you just don’t know what you’re buying!
A brilliant idea!

It would help us all save money and find the right tool. I look forward to this new feature.
