This article evaluates a translation of the poem named "Smile" based on Khomeijani Farahani’s (a Persian translator and researcher) evaluation framework. The translation is evaluated regarding to its 1) Accuracy 2) Formal loyalty 3) Naturalness 4) Consistency 5) Unity Each stitch is evaluated separately regarding the above-mentioned criteria of the framework. It is concluded that the message of the poem has been imparted but the translation lacks the feeling and the tone embedded in the poem.

» Loss and Gain in Humor Translation; A case study of The Ethics of the Aristocrats

This study aims at examining the English translation of humorous expressions in Zakani’s Ethics of Aristocrats in order to 1) detect the strategies used by the translators in rendering Persian humor into English, 2) identify the most frequently used translation strategies and 3) evaluate the loss and gain of meaning and form occurred in the translation of humor discourses. To achieve this objective, humor expressions have been categorized based on Schmitz’ categorization of humor (2002); that is, universal humor, cultural humor and linguistic humor. Strategies are identified and categorized based on Newmark’s (1988) strategies. Loss and gain in meaning and form have been evaluated with regard to the explanations given by the emendator of the Persian work. Results suggest that ‘literal translation’ has been applied with highest frequency but this strategy has mostly been accompanied with other procedures in order for the message to be conveyed.
