Google preparing to launch simultaneous translation service

Google is ready to launch an oral translation service on Gtalk – which is already providing a multilingual written translation service – according to Google’s marketing manager for Turkey, Middle East and Africa.

“We have two types of software at the moment, one is for turning the sounds into written text that we use in voice search and the other one is translating the written text into other languages that we already use in Gtalk,” said Marketing Manager Mustafa İçil.

İçil said the way the system learned the language and different accents was very similar to how humans acquire a second language, namely, through exposure.

Good Luck ;) Oct 20, 2010

I really want to see how the system will work with different pronunciations, dialectal expression and people (happened to me while interpreting on the phone) which mix up languages and in reality invent their own, inexistent, language (these are not rare cases either!)

What will they do with a country like Germany, where the dialect changes every five miles?

These machine translators are indeed good for a chuckle or two. Especially when they leave words unknown to it/them... untranslated.

Says it all, no?icon_smile.gif

Have a great weekend.

Let Google translate robots... for other robots :) Oct 23, 2010

So that's the final destiny of human beings -- to become robots. To be easily translated and even interpreted!

R2D2 vs 3CPO Oct 26, 2010

This should be fun, I would love to be there on the first board meeting Google interprets in, say. Belgium, (Pun intended, no insult.) They have so many dialects there, and THREE national languages. I don´t know for sure, but I would think even human interpreters may have a difficult time there.
You will need two robots, one to interpret the meeting, and one to interpret the 1st robot. R2D2 and 3CPO are a good example.
