One of the most-cited mysteries around the translation of The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka is the one regarding the name of its official Spanish translator. The Spanish translation is sometimes credited to Jorge Luis Borges and sometimes not.This mystery was revived when Nobel Prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa bought a copy in Montevideo which had been translated by Borges.María Kodama gave some clues to solve the mystery. According to her version, Borges did not agree with the Spanish title. He wanted it to be “La transformación” and not “La metamorfosis” and he got angry because of that. That seems to be the reason why he said, “I haven’t translated that book.” According to his widow, Borges did not feel he was the author of the translation because the Spanish version of the book did not receive the title he wanted.
