A policy which makes sure all Charnwood residents can access council documents despite disability or language constraints has been welcomed by councillors.

Charnwood Borough Council’s cabinet last week accepted a new interpretation and translation policy, which encompasses everything the council already does and sets out the services available, including making sure information leaflets, such as new recycling information, use plain English and pictures or pictograms to make it easier to understand and once translated into any language or format, public documents will be available online.

The council has consulted with the likes of Human Rights and Equalities Charnwood and the RNIB on the document, which reflects Government guidance that “in order to build a more cohesive community…all our citizens should be, where necessary, encouraged and supported to learn English”.

Coun Peter Lewis, cabinet member for Culture and Leisure, said: “This is about ensuring that people, in particular those who have disabilities and learning disabilities, have access to our documentation.”
