…SDL is offering “occasional translators” and freelancers is the Trados Starter Edition, a pared-down version of Trados Studio 2009 at a monthly subscription fee of €8 (we figure on US$10 or so per month in the States). This edition limits the number of languages and size of the local translation memory, but it does allow translators to do their own projects and participate in a GIM supply chain involving SDL’ s TMS and WorldServer.

You've captured my mood exactly.
Every time I read SDL promos I want to toss their marketing people in a cold alpine lake to snap them out of their shameless business-babble. If they are going to breathtlessly shout "30% Faster!", I'd like to show them what real breathless mean.

I've felt that I've needed Trados to meet agency requirements, but each upgrade has meant a loss of a week or two of work, and the 2009 Suite is frankly, SLOWER, than working in Workbench sine I had some very good MSWord macros and the typåing autocorrect was a godsend to we who were born with 10 thumbs. ▲ Collapse

€8 per month... How many months long? Or can you use it one month for €8 and then pay nothing more?

I am so curious and very interested to use the new release of SDL. This offers sounds good especially if month-basis could reach to be bi-annum. In country like Indonesia, USD and Pounds really means significant. Is there any soft offer for those countries, perhaps? Thanks Hendry.

I would like to know more about this!
I would be interested in using the software by paying this fee... but can you specify how many months?
Thanks!

Be careful. After purchasing it I now find that since I work in a building whose only internet connection is through a domain server, even though I'm a freelancer, the product can't be activated. Its meant for use by freelancers who work at home with a single direct connection to the internet.

This move probably means that SDL is finally starting to feel some of the heat generated by MemoQ and Deja Vu... Customers will be the winners, both in terms of prices and quality.

Unfortunately the Starter version does not include Multiterm or the facility to create and edit termbase entries. So I'm not interested. Multiterm is one major reason why I have not skipped Trados and gone over to Wordfast long ago. The Wordfast terminology functions are easy to operate, but not as flexible, and I do use them quite a lot.
My choice will be to take advantage of a Group Buy and update my trusty 2007 again.

Greetings! I do not understand how it should function. Does it mean that trados company is not issueing any licenses instead giving them on rental? I am very doubtful. Rao

I recently purchased this Starter's Edition, yet, I haven't been able to figure it out. I find it hard to learn and make use of it so far. Do you know if there is any easy-simple (video) tutorial or seminar(webinar) available for this edition? It would be great to know what your experience so far is like, if you have purchased the same edition and having had similar problems. Cheers!

Come what may, I am to 99% reluctant to rely on any online solution. This is not the future, except if one sees a "future" with strong dependencies to providers who may - or may not - want to sell us "working space" and tools.

Finally some SDL GröFAZ found a way to make the people pay for a demo version.
To be honest, an extended demo version
But, IMO, it doesn't make sense at all.
For the same price, one may have a fully featured MemoQ Standard 1 year subscription.
No advocacy, just a flagrant example of a SDL ad nonsense.

I think it's interesting this kind of "castrated" offers may appear now as a valid business solution.
And probably for the first time the SDL nonsense level was beaten by Lionbridge (Logoport), they announce a crap platform (AFAIK 10 kwords per month for translator's own projects) for an annual fee coomparable to the Trados Freelance price.
Probably some sofware makers find we're really idiots.
Cheers

I may ruffle a few feathers by saying here that in spite of buying a licence for Trados Studio 2009, I am still in love with the Across Standalone Edition, the free version for freelancers. Hardly any file which I cannot manage with it.
