This two hour course will dissect the standard components and terminology found in a variety of legal correspondence.

Course program:

* How to effectively frame and organize legal writing
* Basic grammar and style rules - using correct grammar to enhance clarity.
* Using plain language.
* Complex language structures in legal documents; the use of the passive voice; reported speech and common collocations in legal discourse; phrasal verbs and prepositions
* The structuring of: letters of advice, legal opinions, letters-before-action, reports, memorandums, e-mails and legal briefs
Target audience
Experienced legal translators who are interested in learning more about legal correspondence in order to increase their comprehension and drafting skills while translating.
Learning objectives
This advanced will analyze the structure of legal contracts in order to assist legal translators. It is designed for experienced translators who will learn how to draft legal correspondence in their target language(s). At the end of this course attendees will be able to identify the various standard components in legal correspondence. Course attendees will receive multiple precedents, as well as a course workbook.

This course is approved for two (2) American Translators Association Continuing Education points.

Important: Those that purchase a seat in advance may be able to pay an "early bird" or cheaper price, and those that confirm participation later or last minute, may likely get to pay a higher fee. In some training sessions a price increase based on the number of registrants may also apply, i.e. the first 15 registered pay one price, the next 10 pay a a slightly higher price etc.

Early payment is advised in order to secure participation and help reach the course minimum participation - unfortunately, courses may occasionally be cancelled or rescheduled, if the confirmed participation in advance is very low.

Bio: Suzanne Deliscar is both a lawyer and a Spanish and French to English translator. A graduate of McMaster University with a Combined Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Latin American Studies, and a minor in Science, Technology and Public Policy in 2000, Ms. Deliscar went on to obtain a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Windsor Faculty of Law in 2003. Ms. Deliscar was called to the Bar of the Province of Ontario in 2004 and has been actively practicing law on a full-time basis since that time. As a lawyer-linguist, Suzanne focuses on official document and legal translation, and also trains fellow language professionals in the areas of marketing and legal translation.

This two hour course will dissect the standard clauses and terminology found in contracts. This advanced course will analyze the structure of contracts in order to assist legal translators. At the end of this course attendees will be able to identify the various standard clauses in a contract. Course attendees will receive multiple precedent contracts, as well as a course workbook.

This webinar has been approved for two (2) American Translators Association Continuing Education (CE) points.

Course program:

* The language of contracts, reading and understanding contracts, Standard Contract Clauses * Effectively using shall, shall not, must and will. * Words and phrases that don’t belong in legal documents. * Archaic terms in legal English (hereinafter, therein, etc…) and other terms of reference. Word Formation * Keeping contract provisions readable and clear (reducing average sentence length) * How to organize a contract and use definitions effectively. * Identifying conditional contract clauses.
