Around the Worldfast - Prague - Wordfast Classic Training Level 1

DESCRIPTION

This training will be devoted to setting up and using the general features of Wordfast Classic. A workflow approach from translation quoting to delivery will be used and practical exercises will focus on creating and using glossaries and translation memories, as well as handling references. Time permitting, we'll learn how to create a translation memory from past translations using the alignment function of PlusTools.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this training, you will be able to use Wordfast Classic to:

1. Translate, edit and proofread MS Word documents
2. Create a glossary and add terminology to it during a translation session
3. Import glossaries from Excel or Word files
4. Clean-up a document
5. Analyze a document before quoting for time management
6. Use placeables
7. Customize your configuration
8. Run a concordance (context) search across one or several translation memories
9. Integrate machine translation into your workflow

COURSE OUTLINE

E-learning modules to be completed during the week before the training (4 hours):

- Why use CAT tools?
- Segmentation, Translation Memory, additional functions
- Downloading and installing Wordfast Classic
- Troubleshooting
- Creating a translation memory
- Creating a glossary

In-person training (6 hours):

9:00 - 12:30

First translation session:
- How to create a translation memory (TM), description of an open segment, protecting delimiters, closing a translation session, resuming a translation session, return to the previous segment, cancel a segment, force segmentation, copy the source segment, expand/shrink segments, provisional segments, revising a segmented document

BREAK for Lunch

13:40 -16:50

Cleaning up your document after translating:
- Usual option (“Tools” tab in the WF interface) - clean-up report, simple option (“Quick-clean” icon in the Wordfast toolbar), creating a report folder

Analysis functions:
- Preview, analyze a document, understand the results of an analysis

Handling placeables:
- Preview, selecting placeables, copying placeables, customizing placeables

Terminology management:
- Preview, glossaries, creating a glossary, opening an existing glossary, using a glossary, insert the target word , open the glossary editor with a word selected, open a glossary scroll-down toolbar

Glossary editor:
- Preview, import terminology, glossary editor shortcuts and methods, the Open button, the Tools button, exercises

Working knowledge of MS Word and fluent in English.

Trainees must bring their own laptop for the training with an installed version of Wordfast Classic. If you are having problems installing the software please contact trainer before the training day.

Bio: John Di Rico began offering Wordfast trainings in 2006. He has also taught English and French in the United States, France, and Vietnam and is a certified JCI trainer for adult education. His main concerns are providing quality training adapted to the learning styles of each individual and meeting and exceeding participants’ expectations. Bio: John Di Rico a commencé à proposer des formations Wordfast en 2006. Il a également animé des formations d'anglais et de français aux Etats-Unis, en France et au Vietnam et est certifié comme formateur JCI pour la formation d'adultes. Milan Condak
Bio: Born in Ústí nad Labem, Milan has lived next to Ostrava for the past 50 years. He graduated from VSB Ostrava with a degree in Economics. Prior to becoming an entrepreneur in 1991, he worked as a postal clerk, postmaster, statistician and chief accountant for 23 years.
He began using Wordfast in 2001, and is responsible for the rough Czech translation of the Wordfast Classic manual. He manages a Wordfast mailing list http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/Wordfast_CZ/, founded in 2002, and that now has 185 members.

Milan began providing Wordfast trainings in 2003 and MetaTexis trainings in 2005. He creates a short HTML presentation for certain features or resources
(VLTM, MT: web or desktop + WF Classic, IWS, CATs) based on client needs. They are published on www.condak.net and on CD-ROM.

He has been retired since January 2010, but still runs the company he set up in 2005 for training purposes, Condak.net s.r.o. He speaks Czech and is
fluent in Slovak, English and Russian. He can also get by in German, Polish and French.
