Wordfast for Beginners, Level 1


o Place: ARAPL, 22 avenue Georges Clemenceau, Nice

o Dates: February 14-15, 2008 (9:00 am – 5:00 pm)

o Price: €275 or €350 (FIF-PL, DIF); Discount rates at several hotels!

o Number of participants: maximum of 10

o Required experience: working knowledge of MS Word

The first day will be devoted to setting up and using the general features of Wordfast. The second day will focus on glossaries, translation memory management, and references. Time permitting, we'll learn how to create a translation memory from past translations using the alignment function of PlusTools.


The ARAPL IT room has 10 workstations running on Windows XP with MS Office 2003. However, you may bring your own laptop if you have one.


Note for participants based in France: A €75 administrative fee will be charged if you would like to use your annual government-sponsored training stipend to pay for the training (FIF-PL, DIF).


Note: Trainees who have paid for and received a training session of at least one full day are eligible to a discount (over 25%) on a Wordfast license they buy for themselves.

First translation session:

How to create a translation memory (TM), description of an open segment, protecting delimiters, closing a translation session, resuming a translation session, return to the previous segment, cancel a segment, force segmentation, copy the source segment, expand/shrink segments, provisional segments, revising a segmented document

Cleaning up your document after translating:

Usual option (“Tools” tab in the WF interface) - clean-up report, simple option (“Quick-clean” icon in the Wordfast toolbar), creating a report folder

Analysis functions:

Preview, analyze a document, understand the results of an analysis

Handling placeables:

Preview, selecting placeables, copying placeables, personalizing placeables

Terminology management:

Preview, glossaries, creating a glossary, opening an existing glossary, using a glossary, insert the target word where the cursor is located, open the glossary editor with a word selected, open a glossary scroll-down toolbar

Glossary editor:

Preview, import terminology, glossary editor shortcuts and methods, the Open button, the Tools button, exercises

Bio: John Di Rico began offering Wordfast trainings in 2006. He has also taught English and French in the United States, France, and Vietnam and is a certified JCI trainer for adult education. His main concerns are providing quality training adapted to the learning styles of each individual and meeting and exceeding participants’ expectations.
