Description In less than a decade we have gone from simultaneous or consecutive interpreting, to over-the-phone and video-interpreting (simultaneous or consecutive), to web-based instant message delivery. Technology is transforming our profession at light speed, literally. The term "medical video interpreting" is so new that many in the profession don't even know of its existence, yet the technology it is based on (and already commercially available) is sure to change the entire profession. Professional associations are scrambling to get to speed with the changes to better serve their members; certification and credentialing is becoming more urgent than ever; education and training are flourishing; and technology surprises us with so many and fast innovations, that it is hard to keep up with it. This session stresses the fact that instead of resisting technology, we must embrace it and learn to use it to further professional advancement and intercultural communication. If linguists do not become part of the digital revolution, we will soon be left out of the loop of progress... similar to what happened a few decades ago to office workers and freelancers (including translators) who refused to learn how to use a computer ... they quickly became professionally obsolete because they were no longer able to interact in the modern interconnected world. Target audience Professional Interpreters
Aspiring Interpreters
Professional Translators
Aspiring Translators
Language Service Providers and/or their freelancers
Bilingual personnel working or aspiring to work as interpreters
Cross-cultural communicators, interculturalists, as well as administrators and personnel who deal with or want to learn about Cultural Diversity in the workforce Learning objectives Understand the role of the interpreter and cultural competency in the Global Village of the 21 Century as well as the state of the industry, including the impact of language service providers, globalization, virtualization. and the digital revolution, and how these are progressively and rapidly changing the delivery of interpreting services. Linguists in general, and interpreters in particular, are inter-cultural communicators at many levels of the human experience. It is therefore essential to be extremely aware of the world as it is today.
