Liberal commentators in America and Europe, alongside European leaders such as Nicolas Sarkozy and to a lesser extent Gordon Brown, have slated Israel over its recent airstrikes. They have called on the Israelis to ‘respect Gaza’s integrity’ or to keep their ‘Hands off Gaza!’ (1). This may come off as radical: standing up to the powerful Israeli military on behalf of the beleaguered 1.5million Palestinians who live in Gaza. But, in truth, there is a deeply uncritical and even conformist streak to this supposed solidarity with Gazans. The outraged critics of Israel accept the Western-imposed idea that Gaza, in effect a glorified refugee camp, should be a distinct pseudo-statelet for Palestinians, separate from Israel and even from the Jews. And yet this separation is the very condition that keeps Gaza impoverished, unfree and in a state of permanent conflict with its bigger, more powerful neighbour.
Critics attack Israel for its use of force in Gaza. Yet they implicitly support the partitionist and sectarian underpinnings of the Middle Eastern ‘peace process’, which has upped the ante between Israel and Gaza. Facilitated by Washington and Brussels over the past 15 years, the peace process has been based on the idea that Israelis and Palestinians must be permanently separated – that is, the Middle East must be partitioned. The Oslo Accords of 1993, overseen by then US President Bill Clinton, called for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from parts of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and affirmed ‘a Palestinian right of self-government within those areas through the creation of a Palestinian Authority’. The Roadmap for Peace of 2003 – drawn up by the US, the UN, the EU and Russia – called for a ‘permanent two-state solution’ and demanded ‘clear, unambiguous acceptance’ of this solution from both Israel and the Palestinians (2).
The central theme of the peace process is always that Israelis and Palestinians cannot possibly live together in a democratic federal state, and thus there must be a ‘permanent’ separation which must be kept in check by ‘formal monitoring mechanisms’ overseen by the international community (in the words of the Roadmap for Peace) (3). This divisive dynamic, far from ushering in a new era of peace, has heightened sectarian tensions between Israel and the Palestinians. And nowhere is this clearer than in Gaza.

Fredsprocessens grundförutsättning är den att israeler och palestinier under inga omständigheter kan leva tillsammans i en demokratisk, federal stat och att en ”permanent” separation därför är nödvändig, en separation som i sin tur ska kontrolleras av det internationella samfundets ”offentliga övervakningsapparatur” (som uttryckt i Färdplanen för fred) (3). Denna splittringsmanöver har inte lyckats med föresatsen att få till stå ett nytt fredligt skede utan har istället intensifierat det sekteristiska spänningsförhållandet mellan israeler och palestinier. Det tydligaste exemplet på detta är Gaza.

Bilingual education was said to be essential for the purposes of gaining a new sense of pride for the Hispanics and to resist Americanization. The Lau v. Nichols (1974) decision stands out as a landmark on the road to bilingual education for those unable to speak English: bilingual education moved away from a transitional year to a multiyear plan to teach children first in their home language, if it was not English, before teaching them in English. This facilitation theory imprisoned Spanish speakers in classrooms where essentially only Spanish was taught, and bilingual education became Spanish cultural maintenance with English limited to thirty minutes a day. The essay discusses the pros and cons of bilingual education.
Criticism of bilingual education has grown as parents and numerous objective analyses have shown it was ineffective, kept students too long in Spanish-only classes, and slowed the learning of English and assimilation into American society. High dropout rates for Latino students, low graduation rates from high schools and colleges have imprisoned Spanish speakers at the bottom of the economic and educational ladder in the United States.
This revolt, the defects of bilingual education, and the changes needed to restore English for the Children are covered in the essay. The implications of Proposition 227 abolishing bilingual education in California are also discussed.

En tvåspråkig undervisning sades vara grundläggande för skapandet av en latinamerikansk nationell stolthet och för motverkandet av amerikanisering. Utgången i Lau v. Nichols-fallet (1974) blev en milstolpe på vägen mot tvåspråkig undervisning: från att tidigare ha sträckt sig över endast ett (övergångs)år blev nu den tvåspråkiga undervisningen befordrad till en flerårsplan där icke-engelskspråkiga barn i första hand skulle undervisas på och i sina respektive hemspråk, inte förrän därefter på och i engelska. Denna underlättningsteori resulterade i att spansktalande barn hölls instängda i klassrum där i stort sett bara spanska lärdes ut och i att den tvåspråkiga undervisningen kom att handla om underhållandet av spansk kultur; studier av det engelska språket fick finna sig i att begränsas till en halvtimme per dag. Denna uppsats diskuterar för- och nackdelarna med tvåspråkig undervisning.
Kritiken mot tvåspråkig undervisning har växt i takt med att föräldrar och diverse opartiska analyser har konstaterat dess ineffektivitet och dess tendens att hålla kvar elever i spansktalande undervisning för länge och på så vis verkat för att sakta ner deras inlärning av det engelska språket samt deras assimilering i det amerikanska samhället.
