Le président Barack Obama s’est-il trop incliné devant le roi Abadallah d’Arabie saoudite lors du sommet du G-20 à Londres?
Son porte-parole a dû s’en expliquer devant la presse comme si ce geste traduisait une inclinaison américaine vers la politique saoudienne, ce qui, s’agissant du conflit israélo-palestinien se traduirait par un soutien plus affirmé à l’Initiative arabe de paix réaffirmée par la Ligue arabe lors du dernier sommet de Doha.
Alors que le correspondant diplomatique du Haaretz indiquait cette semaine que la Maison Blanche avait pris langue avec des élus du Congrès dans la perspective d’une tension avec le nouveau gouvernement israélien, le président Obama a signé jeudi une autorisation pour que les Palestiniens puissent maintenir ouvert le bureau de l’OLP à Washington (pour contourner une disposition votée en 1987 interdisant théoriquement une telle représentation).
Le site Politico précise que cette signature est intervenu quelques heures avant le dîner de Seder de la Pâque juive, célébré à la Maison Blanche par le président américain.

Did President Barack Obama bow a bit too deeply to Saudi Arabian King Abdullah at the G-20 summit in London?
His spokesperson implied, in explaining it to the press, that the gesture symbolized the U.S.’s deference to Saudi politics; this, in light of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, could be construed as reaffirming support of the Arab Peace Initiative that the Arab League upheld at their last summit in Doha.
The Haaretz diplomatic correspondent pointed out this week that there was an underlying tension apparent in White House dialogue with Congressional representatives concerning the new Israeli government. Meanwhile, President Obama signed an order on Thursday allowing the Palestinians to keep their Washington PLO office open (overruling a 1987 position statement which theoretically banned PLO representation in the U.S.).
Politico.com pointed out that this signing occurred just hours before the Jewish Passover Seder dinner that the American president holds yearly at the White House. |
