Ottheinrich's Bible
Around the year 1425, an anonymous member of the court commissioned one of the finest German Bible manuscripts in Regensburg. From the 10th century the illuminator's workshops in Regensburg inspired the schools in the Danube region, where monasteries specialised in illustrated luxury manuscripts which still impress us today with their quality decoration and individual creativity. Ottbeinrich, the bibliophile Elector Palatine (1502-1559), bought the manuscript around 1530 as a showpiece for his world famous Bibliotheca Palatina in Heidelberg. Thanks to him, this magnificent work of art and monument to the German language has been saved for posterity. Ottheinrich hired the Renaissance master Matthias Gerung to continue with the decoration of the manuscript and the artist made it into the unequalled and sumptuous edition of the New Testament that we know today. Written in the early High German language, the book can be easily understood by modern readers.
In total, eight volumes containing the New testament texts in German have come down to us, three of which are now kept in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. The first two volumes of Ottheinrich's Bible, meanwhile compiled in one volume for reasons of conservation under the book number Cgm 8010/1.2, encompass the Gospels of Saint Matthew and Saint Mark as well as portions of the Gospel of Saint Luke.
Their importance among the masterpieces of German art cannot be overstated. Ottheinrich's Bible is also of the greatest interest in the history of the German language, since it was written at a time when Luther's translation of the New Testament was still 100 years in the future.
Ottheinrich's Bible is a courtly masterpiece, lavishly illustrated with sparkling gold and precious colours.
Whoever commissioned it originally intended more than the simple ordering of a luxury manuscript and must have wished to possess a work representing the culmination of the accomplishments of the most eminent artists of his time. The two principal masters are from the school of the leading Regensburgian artist of the period, the Master of the Carrying of the Cross of Worcester. Named after the Gospels from their hands in Ottheinrich's Bible, they are referred to as the Master of Saint Matthew and Saint Mark.
78 folios in the representative format of 53.2 x 37.2 cm are ornate with 46 miniatures on a gold leaf ground, which is additionally decorated with the most exquisite gold chasing. The layout and design of the miniatures frequently covering half a page in sometimes a full page are in the style of panel paintings. More than 40 brushed gold initials with colourful vines are dispersed throughout the text which is written in two columns. Priceless opaque colours and gold abound to imitate the texture of precious materials, pearl embroideries and precious stones. Secular themes from courtly life are hidden in playful details: a stag hunt, a loving couple, a court jester, and all kinds of coloured birds, are found in the decorative scrollwork.
Most miniatures go back to the Master of Saint Matthew whose paintings recall the style of Giotto. His colour pallet comprises violet and grey tones, in order to underline the modelling of figures. The Master of Saint Mark also follows Italian models in his work. A talented storyteller, he tries to animate the scene to be depicted by enlargement and imaginative drama. Both painters were active in the same workshop and thus had access to the some italian models, a rather common situation in Regensburg where masters from Padua and Verona worked together. Although sharing a common stylistic background, both artists, however, developed their individual technique of painting to the utmost perfection.
In the course of the conquest of Heidelberg during the Thirty Years War, Duke Maximilian of Bavaria transferred Ottheinrich's Bible to the court library at Munich from where it was looted my Swedish troops and taken to Gotha in 1636. Taken apart and rebound in the late 19th century, five volumes returned to Heidelberg by way of exchange, whereas tie Bavarian National Library bad to wait until 1950 to acquire the volumes containing the most lavishly decorated Gospels of Saint Matthew, Mark and Luke from a private collector.
Ottheinrich's Bible was faithfully reproduced in a limited facsimile edition of 980 copies in the original format of 53.2 x 37.2 cm. In a laborious process, gold leaf, brushed gold and diverse colour applications of the original were reproduced employing separate printing processes. Out of a total of 78 leaves, 46 are ornate with colourful miniatures, 41 brushed gold initials structure the German text which is written in two columns in a monumental textualis script. To confer the showpiece in Ottheinrich's collections the princely aura it used to have, the Bible was given a binding imitating the most expensive deluxe binding ever made for this high-ranking commissioner. Similar to the binding of 1558 (Universitätsbibliothek Heidelberg, Cod. Pal. germ. 833) the binding of the facsimile edition is decorated with rich gold and blind tooling, eight bosses and four clasps. The front cover shows Ottheinrich's portrait in gold tooling; the back cover is ornate with Ottheinrich's coat of arms as Elector Palatine. All tooling is reproduced precisely by means of an expensive hand process.

Около 1425 года в Регенсбурге неизвестный придворный заказал одну из красивейших рукописей немецкой Библии. Мастерские миниатюристов в Регенсбурге с 10-го века служили образцом для школ в Дунайском регионе, где монастыри специализировались на оформлении роскошных манускриптов, которые и поныне впечатляют нас качеством своего «убранства» и оригинальностью творческого метода. Отто Генрих (1502-1559), пфальцграф и библиофил, купил манускрипт около 1530 года в качестве экспоната для своей всемирно известной Палатинской библиотеки в Гейдельберге. Благодаря ему это великолепное произведение искусства и памятник немецкого языка сохранился для потомков. Чтобы завершить иллюстрирование манускрипта, Отто Генрих нанял ренессансного художника Матиаса Герунга, который и превратил его в то непревзойденное издание Нового Завета, которое мы видим сегодня. Благодаря тому, что книга написана на верхненемецком языке, она доступна пониманию современных читателей.
В общей сложности до нас дошли восемь томов текстов Нового Завета на немецком языке, три из которых сейчас хранятся в Баварской государственной библиотеке. Два первых тома «Библии Отто Генриха», которые в целях сохранности сейчас объединены в одну книгу под номером Cgm 8010/1.2, содержат Евангелия от Матфея и Марка, а также часть Евангелия от Луки.
Их значение среди других шедевров немецкого искусства невозможно переоценить. К тому же «Библия Отто Генриха» представляет огромный интерес с точки зрения истории немецкого языка, так как она была создана за сто лет до появления перевода Нового Завета, сделанного Лютером.
«Библия Отто Генриха» – изысканный шедевр, щедро украшенный золотом и тщательно подобранными красками. Кем бы ни был первоначальный заказчик, он желал получить не просто роскошный манускрипт, а рукопись, которая бы стала кульминацией достижений самых известных современных ему художников. Два основных мастера были из школы ведущего художника Регенсбурга того времени – Мастера Несения Креста из Вустера. Их называют Мастером святого Матфея и Мастером святого Луки в честь тех Евангелий, которые они оформляли в «Библии Отто Генриха».
78 листов ин-фолио типичного формата 53,2х37,2 см, богато украшенных 46 миниатюрами на фоне из сусального золота, дополнительно декорированном изящнейшей золотой гравировкой. По своему расположению и композиции миниатюры, которые часто занимают полстраницы, а иногда и целую страницу, выполнены в стиле станковой живописи. Текст, разделенный на две колонки, пересыпан золотыми инициалами общим количеством более сорока знаков из «ракушечного» золота с цветными лозами. Изумительной красоты матовые краски и обилие золота имитируют текстуру дорогих материалов, жемчужного шитья и драгоценных камней. Сцены из дворцовой жизни прячутся в шуточных деталях: в декоративном орнаменте из завитков можно найти охоту на оленя, влюбленную пару, придворного шута, всевозможных ярких птичек.
Большинство миниатюр принадлежит перу Мастера святого Матфея, чьи рисунки по стилю напоминают работы Джотто. Очертания человеческих фигур он передает фиолетовыми и серыми цветами. Мастер святого Марка в своих работах также следует итальянским образцам. Будучи талантливым рассказчиком, он пытается оживить изображаемую сцену посредством увеличения и драматизации. Оба художника работали в одной мастерской, и у них была возможность изучать некоторые итальянские образцы – довольно распространенная ситуация в Регенсбурге, где вместе работали мастера из Падуи и Вероны. After a buoyant start to the year, the dollar seems headed for a tumble
THERE was a time, not long ago, when economists and those who dabble in the foreign-exchange market could find scarcely a good thing to say about the dollar. Last year, John Snow, America's treasury secretary, even managed to transform his country's long-standing strong-dollar policy into a weak-dollar one. All this greatly irritated Europeans, especially; as the euro rose, international meetings of the great and the good were dominated by cross discussions about the beleaguered buck. Newspapers, including this one, were full of gloomy headlines suggesting that the greenback would, indeed should, fall farther.
So it did, for a while: by early January, the dollar was worth a quarter less, in trade-weighted terms, than it had been two years before. But when everyone is betting that a market will go one way, it often goes the other. By mid-May, the dollar had risen by 8%, bucked up, as it were, by the Bank of Japan, which bought ¥14.8 trillion ($138 billion) of foreign exchange in the first quarter, almost all of it dollars, in comfortably the largest-ever act of intervention by a central bank. Then, quietly, the dollar started to drop. By July 6th, it had fallen by 4.3% from its high. Not surprisingly, perhaps: the dollar's prospects look even worse now than they did last year.
The dollar's recent decline may seem puzzling, for it began while expectations were mounting that the Federal Reserve was about to put up interest rates. The decline has continued since those expectations were confirmed on June 30th. Rising interest rates, you might have thought, would halt any such decline.

Газеты, в том числе и эта, пестрели мрачными заголовками о том, что зеленая валюта может, а, скорее всего, и будет, продолжать свое падение.
Какое-то время так и было: к началу января покупательная способность доллара была на четверть меньше, чем два года назад. Но когда все уверены, что рынок будет развиваться в одном направлении, он часто двигается в противоположном. К середине мая доллар вырос на 8% благодаря, так сказать, «зеленому коридору» – поддержке со стороны Банка Японии, который в первом квартале скупил иностранную валюту, практически исключительно доллары США, на 14,8 триллионов иен (138 миллиардов долларов), что, безусловно, стало самой крупной интервенцией со стороны какого-либо центрального банка за всю историю.
