VoWLAN（無線LAN IP電話）
VoWLANは、IP電話システムを無線LAN環境でも使用できるようにする技術の総称である。企業での無線LANの普及とともに、データと音声を無線LAN環境で統合して運用したいという要望も高まっている。また日本では、PHS技術を用いた事業所コードレス電話システムの代替技術としても期待されている。だが、音声パケットをIPネットワーク上で送受信する場合、データ通信ではあまり問題にならなかったネットワーク内での遅延や揺らぎ（ジッター）が通話品質を左右する。さらにVoWLANでは、無線LAN特有の技術課題が加わる。例えば、無線LANの帯域は有線LANよりも狭いため、音声パケットの破棄や制御メッセージの欠落が起こりやすい。これらは通話品質に深刻な影響を与える。こうした課題に対し、各メーカーは独自の技術で対策を講じたり、IEEEやIETF、Wi-Fiアライアンスで新しい技術仕様を議論している。本稿では、無線IP電話機への採用が進むQoS規格のIEEE 802.11e、セキュリティを考慮した高速ハンドオーバーを規定するIEEE 802.11iを中心にVoWLANの技術を解説する。

VoWLAN (Voice over Wireless LAN)
VoWLAN is a general term used to describe technology that enables the use of IP telephony systems in a wireless LAN environment. With the spread of wireless LAN usage in the corporate environment, there is increased demand to integrate the use of voice and data within the wireless LAN environment. Additionally, in Japan, people are looking at this technology as a replacement to the current PHS-based intra-office cordless phone system. However, when sending and receiving voice packets over an IP network, data latency and jitter, issues that have little or no impact for data packets, can have negative impact on voice quality. There also are unique technology challenges associated with VoWLAN. For example, because the bandwidth used over wireless LAN is narrower than that used in wired LAN, there is a greater chance of voice packets being destroyed or control messages being lost. Such issues will seriously impact voice quality. In order to address these issues, equipment manufacturers are devising their own unique solutions while also discussing new technology specifications at forums such as IEEE, IETF or Wi-Fi Alliance. This paper will discuss VoWLAN technology with a focus on IEEE 802.11e, a QoS standard used on many wireless IP phones, and IEEE 802.11i, a high-speed data handover standard designed to improve data security.
