Since 1900, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has risen by 30%. Most Scientists now agree that human activities such as power stations, industry, transport and burning fossil fuels (coal, oil or gas) causes the atmosphere to heat up, adding to the greenhouse effect.
The Maldive Islands consist of 1,192 islands, most of which are around 1m above sea level – the lowest lying and flattest islands in the world.
If the Arctic ice cap melts, replaced by an Arctic Ocean, the global sea level would rise further (it’s already rising) threatening to drown low-lying coastal area. Polar bears depend on the Arctic ice, even in summer, to live on, and catch seals. In 2005 an ice island 16km long and 5km wide broke away from the Canadian Arctic Coast. | Translation - Romanian
Din anul 1900, cantitatea de dioxid de carbon din atmosfera a crescut cu 30%. Cei mai multi oameni de stiinta sunt acum de acord cu faptul ca activitatile umane ca si centralele electrice, industria, transportul si arderea de combustibili fosili (carbune, petrol sau gaz) cauzeaza incalzirea atmosferei, adugandu-se la efectul de sfera.
Insulele Maldive sunt alcatuite din 1,192 de insule, dintre care majoritatea se afla la aproximativ 1m deasupra nivelului marii - cele mai joase si cele mai plate insule din lume.
Daca invelisul de gheata Arctic se topeste, fiind inlocuit de un ocean Arctic, nivelul marii global s-ar ridica in continuare (se ridica deja) amenintand sa scufunde zona de coasta situata la un nivel scazut. Ursii polari depind de gheata Arctica, chiar si in timpul verii, pentru a putea trai si a vana foci. In anul 2005 o insula de gheata lunga de 16km si lata de 5km s-a rupt din Coasta Arctica Canadiana. |
