Ethernet never presupposed what sort of medium the data would travel over, be it coaxial cable or radio waves (hence the term “ether” to describe some undefined path). That made it flexible, able to incorporate improvements without challenging its fundamental design.
[...] Third, Ethernet is based on decentralisation. It lets smart “end-devices”, such as PCs, do the work of plucking the data out of the ether, rather than relying on a central unit to control the way those data are routed. In this way, Ethernet evolved in tandem with improvements in computing power—a factor that was largely overlooked by both critics and proponents when Ethernet was being pooh-poohed in the 1980s and early 1990s.
Beyond the technology, there is even a lesson for companies investing in research, albeit one learned through tears rather than triumph. Xerox failed to commercialise Ethernet, as it similarly missed exploiting other inventions created at PARC, such as the mouse and the graphical user interface. To develop Ethernet fully, Dr Metcalfe had to leave PARC and found 3Com, now a big telecommunications-component firm. The lesson may have sunk in. In January 2002 PARC was carved out as an independent subsidiary of Xerox. That allows it to explore partnerships, spin-offs and licensing agreements without having to get its parent's permission.
And the future?
Many geeks believe the fashionable wireless standard 802.11b, better known as Wi-Fi, is poised to become the next iteration of the technology, once concerns about its security have been resolved. Wi-Fi is able to deliver cheap internet access at a rate of many megabits-per-second, and it can do so at a range of up to 100 metres. Dr Metcalfe, who based Ethernet's early designs on a radio network called AlohaNet, that linked the Hawaiian islands, sees Wi-Fi as “Ethernet coming home”. | Translation - French

You have just started to work for Easy Nomad Ltd. under the supervision of Jonathan Gold. They are a company that organizes holidays to numerous worldwide destinations, catering for multiple interests. The company specializes in holidays to Europe, North America, and the Far East.
Jonathan has asked you to send him a breakdown of the 2000 sales results itemized by office and quarter.
To select two separate ranges of cells at the same time, select the first range, then hold down the Ctrl key and select the second range.
Sending worksheets as attachments from within Microsoft Excel can be done using Outlook Express, Microsoft Exchange client, Microsoft Outlook or another 32-bit e-mail client that works with the Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI). In order to send Excel worksheets as the body of a message you are required to have Outlook 2000 or Outlook 2002 properly configured on your system.
Your assignment for this exercise is to create a table of the itemized sales in 2000 by office and by quarter as listed in the following 8 steps.
Create a new workbook. Rename the first worksheet to Summary and delete the remaining two worksheets.
On the Summary worksheet, type the text 2000 Sales Results (US$) in cell B2.
Type in the names of the 4 offices (New York, Los Angeles, Singapore, London) in cells A5 to A8.
Cells B4 to E4 will contain headings for the yearly quarters. Type the text Qtr 1, Qtr 2, Qtr 3, Qtr 4 in these cells.
Change the background color of the ranges A5..A8 and B4..E4 to Grey and for these same ranges, change the alignment so that the text aligns to the right side of the cell and the font is bolded.
Change the background color of the range B5..E8 to Light Blue and the number format to Accounting with no decimal places.
In 2000, the New York office had the following quarterly sales figures: $7,787, $97,343, $24,563, and $5,699. The Los Angeles office submitted the figures $8,772, $113,676, $2,347, and $9,822. The Singapore office had done $7,837, $7,846, $7,354, and $8,261 for each quarter in 2000. The last numbers came from the London office, where they reported $6,722, $6,432, $91,782, and $6,782.
Save the Workbook as an HTML file named sales_by_office.htm.
