Nelly se mit à pleurer doucement. Combien Lili pouvait lui manquer ! Jenny, qui tentait de garder son calme, hocha la tête en signe de désapprobation. Viergemaine s’était toujours montrée saine d’esprit ! Que racontait-elle ?
La jeune femme comprit qu’elle devait garder son calme si elle voulait se faire comprendre. Elle respira profondément une fois encore, avant de continuer.
« Ecoutez-moi bien. Et surtout restez calmes… Pensons aux jours qui ont précédé la «mort » de Lili… Elle était tellement malade qu’elle préférait garder le lit la majeure partie du temps. Vous vous le rappelez ?
- Parfaitement ! Elle semblait de temps en temps perdre la notion du temps et il lui arrivait même quelques fois de parler toute seule, murmura Nelly, le visage pâle.
- Réfléchissons bien. Tilami, le jardinier, visitait alors des parents en province. Un autre homme le remplaçait pour quelques jours...
- Oui, appuya Jenny. Un dénommé Elias qui a quitté ses services le lendemain même de la mort de Lili.
- Lorsque je suis montée auprès de Madame Lavigna, continua Viergemaine, elle a d’ailleurs attiré mon attention sur le fait d’être abandonnée par tout son personnel.
- Quel rapport ?” demanda Nelly d’une voix enrouée.
